I thoroughly enjoyed the placement and I was particularly impressed with the speed in which I was gaining responisibility and subsequent experience. I loved the pressure, responsibility and acclaim that came with acting as a store manager. I definitely made the right choice in terms of whom to do my placement with.
The 48 week placement was extremely challenging, but I overcome the challenges I was presented with and pushed myself, which resulted in me gaining an invaluable amount from the year. Upon reflection some elements and aspects I enjoyed a lot more than others but this helped me realise the area of business I would like to go into in the future.
Like any job there were ups and downs. The route I took through the placement took me out of my comfort zone, which was great for my development but also challenged me day-to-day. Each placement student starts for 4 weeks learning the Store Assistant job for example which will mean you will work on the tills and mop the floor. However if you expect to be running a store on your own after 6 months then this is vital! There is so much variety with regards to what you do there is no reason why, as long as you know what to expect, you won't enjoy yourself.
As an experience this was quite invaluable for me. As it is very tough at times you can look back and say - I did it. The positive thing about this placement is at the same time its biggest challenge: You will take on responsibilty at an early stage. The working times can be quite tough throughout you sales module: Early mornings, late nights, and weekend shifts are not unusual. Later on in the placement working times become more regular. There were times were I really enjoyed the placement, seeing that I made real progress and got intensive experience and an extensive insight into the business. On the other hand it was quite tough at times, after all you will be mainly working in a deep discounting environment.
