I enjoyed the environment I worked in, but there was a bit of a lack of direction in terms of what the department wanted me to achieve by the end of the placement. There was possibly too much emphasis on 'development', to the point where it was patronising.
You begin the internship induction in which you get you know all the other interns doing the internship across office. It is a fun experience with socials in the evenings and free accommodation in central edinburgh. The induction prepared me my first day in the office so I knew was to expect and wasn't too nervous! really enjoyed the professional environment and I became good friends with the team, plus it was during the Fringe festival, which my group got involved in a lot.
I thoroughly enjoyed the internship. I was given three interesting projects which I was able to make real progress on during my 8 weeks at Standard Life. My colleagues were all very willing to help me and I think this made it very easy to enjoy the work that I was asked to do. Standard Life were very accomodating - when there were specific areas of the business that I wanted to see, I was able to.
I throughly enjoyed working for standard life investments. You are looked after very well and treated like a member of staff. The work I was given was varied and interesting and required me to step out of my comfort zone. We were also encouraged to be sociable and enjoy our time in Edinburgh : a social committee was created who organised a ceilidh for us and payed for it all. Overall a great experience.
The internship was overall a very positive experience. The work I completed felt like it had real relevance for the business and I learnt a lot about the company, its ethos and its way of doing things. There was no pressure to commit to a graduate role afterwards, which I can see being a real issue in other internships, so that made it much easier to just relax and get on with things. The charity day was the best day by a mile and something really worth getting involved in! The social side was a real bonus too; living in apartments with all the other interns was a lot of fun, especially once the Fringe started.
My internship experience has been great, I have enjoyed very much. The company is great and established, but the team has been as a family for me. The culture of the firm is very strong and you can perceived to be valued and that everybody, starting from your managers to your colleague want to help you. The company also has organized very well this summer internship, as a matter of fact has organized a lot of events to help the intern to socialize. The balance between work and free time is incredibly good and therefore I have had the possibility to truly enjoy this experience
