I absolutely loved my placement at Standard Life. The work was challenging but super interesting and very related to my university course. People at Standard Life are happy to help you and chat to you about their careers and I felt completely included in the team. I couldn't have spent my summer in a better way and I would recommend Standard Life to anyone, especially in the Actuarial profession.
I enjoyed my internship a lot. The work I was doing was interesting and what I’ve done will actually have an impact on the business. On top of this, Standard Life set the internship programme up so that you have a network of other interns there to support you, and to have fun with. I’m from England, had never been to Edinburgh and knew no one here. But I made so many friends through the internship network, and had a genuinely fun summer – both inside and out of work.
It has been an extremely enjoyable, I am so glad I've done it. The people around me were a massive factor in that as they made me feel involved and not 'just the intern'. Additionally, the work I've been doing was proper work with a lot of business value attached and so my internship felt like it had meaning and I could see the point in everything I was doing.
On a placement within Standard life investments you are given the freedom and responsibility to explore many areas of the company outside that of which you are working in. For example, I was working within the operations team but was allowed time to meet with team members of equity, trading and performance management teams to name a few. This gave me a great overview of what happens within an investment company. The people at SLI are also incredibly welcoming and are more than ready to answer any questions. The intern community Is a very enjoyable element of the placement- having so many interns in the same accommodation means you're bound to make good friends.
The work and tasks given to me were at the correct level for my experience from university and past employment. This made the work more enjoyable as it was equally challenging and rewarding. As expected with every job, there were a few tasks within the internship which I didn't enjoy, mainly due to the dependency on Excel, which I haven't had much exposure to. However, my manager was very forthcoming with help and advice when needed. The internship was structured so I got the opportunity to join 6 different teams within the Finance department, offering a wide range of varied experiences and exposure to many people within the business.
I enjoyed the challenge of this internship and was given much responsibility. It was highly technical and computer orientated with much work with Excel that I wasn't anticipating in a Client and Marketing role, however I was able to work across a variety of teams on several projects so was able to get involved in lots of different areas of the company within my department.
The 10 weeks were focused on one project (in my case, about the insurance industry) and this meant I became very knowledgeable in that area. I really enjoyed the project, the people and the office environment. You definitely get a great work-life balance here - come in at 9 and leave at 5. It is very rare the hours will be different. Office feels really nice, with good lunch setup and plenty of chat during the day amongst colleagues, who will welcome you right from the start.
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Standard Life Investments. The work I did was challenging but enjoyable to tackle an area I had never had any real experience of before. The internship was flexible within Investment Ops so I was able to gain exposure to lots of different teams within the department and learn about what areas I enjoyed. The combination of such flexibility and the responsibility I was given within my team made the work I did each day good fun. The internship scheme itself brings the interns together across the whole of Standard Life which created a community feel within the interns in addition to the friendliness of people at Standard Life in general.
The internship was super! I really enjoyed my time with Standard Life Investments. My team were really good fun, and very friendly, but they always maintained a good work-play balance. The work I did was interesting and inspired me. I was able to meet lots of different people across the company which was really useful.
I really enjoyed my time at Standard Life (Investments). The work was both interesting and challenging while the work environment was friendly and helpful. While my area of work was fairly specialised there were lots of opportunities to get involved in a variety of projects and see different areas of the business.
The HR internship with Standard Life was highly enjoyable. There are many training sessions giving you the chance to develop yourself and the skills that you have. The people from the company are open and welcoming and always give you the chance to be part of their team and show you what its like to do their job.
I thoroughly enjoyed working at Standard Life over the past couple months. It is a challenging but rewarding programme that is very much focused on your development. You receive a wide variety of development opportunities during your internship and you also get the opportunity to socialise with other interns throughout.
