Coming from a scientific background I really enjoyed the opportunity to work amongst a wider mix of people whilst interning. I think the exposure to a real, working business environment was really useful for me when thinking where I might want to end up after University.
The internship enabled me to work on a C# application which is directly inline with what I want to be doing after I graduate - a group project was also set for all the interns across different departments and cities. Although this joint project gave me a lot of experience with working in a team and having meetings/presentations, it did take up a lot of my time and ended up distracting me from fully completing my programming work, which should have been my biggest focus as it is more relevant to my future career.
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship in the Sales Department at FDM Group. I have developed existing skills and acquired new skills that will be invaluable in any future job that I have in the future. I feel it has been a great stepping stone between the second year of University and graduate jobs that I will be applying to in the upcoming autumn. I was given many opportunities and entrusted with tasks during my internship, individually and within teams, and I never once felt like just the 'intern' but was always treated like a valued and equal employee. It was great to have an insight in a leading graduate IT employee in such a hands on and rewarding fashion.
As far as placements go, it was as exciting, interesting and engaging as possible. I was part of a team of interns from across Glasgow, Leeds and London who worked on creating (from scratch) a virtual reality project. Aside from this, I was able to work on creating a dashboard for the Glasgow/Leeds offices, which was a C# ASP.Net application. This wasn't something I had any previous experience with, so was really great getting a chance to learn about it - and with a lot of support from members of staff up and down the country.
I hugely enjoyed my time at FDM, during the 8 week internship I was assigned several tasks of my own - both individual and group task with the 9 other interns based in the UK. The biggest group project was to research and create a Virtual Reality video to be used to showcase FDM Group and their award winning graduate fair. During this we were able to research and purchase the equipment needed, film the video, edit and export it onto the VR headsets we had chosen - to end the project all the interns, from London, Leeds and Glasgow, were flown to London to present the project to the board of directors!
