Our Heritage

In 1760, the Register Society was formed by the various marine professionals who frequented Edward Lloyd’s London coffee shop. It printed the first Register of Ships in 1764 to give underwriters and merchants an idea of the condition of the vessels they insured and chartered. In 1834, the organisation became Lloyd’s Register of British and Foreign Shipping and the first classification Rules were published. Since then we’ve opened offices around the world and applied our expertise to a wide range of other industrial sectors.

Our Organisation

Lloyd’s Register is a non-profit distributing organisation and one of the world’s leading classification societies.

Our clients range from large multinational companies to small local businesses; from shipowners and giants in the energy market to those who deliver goods to shops and homes. So many of the everyday things people rely on have benefited from our help. Many companies in the sectors we serve recognise the value of working with us and trust us to help them improve safety, quality and business performance. Like any technology-driven sector, the marine and energy industries are constantly changing, so one of our challenges is to ensure classification and consultancy services remain at the leading edge.

Our four main areas of business are Marine, Transportation, Energy and Management Systems.

Marine

Our Marine business principally involves classification of ships, which sets standards of quality and reliability during their design, construction and operation. As well as carrying out statutory inspections for national administrations, required by international shipping conventions and codes, we also help ship owners and operators understand risks and improve business performance.

Energy

We provide compliance, technical consulting and business solutions to companies of all sizes and from all sectors within the energy industry - upstream downstream, power and manufacturing. Our Energy business helps clients to improve the safety, reliability and performance of their assets.
