I really enjoyed the majority of the work that was set. It was all in-line with what I’d previously learnt and I felt that it utilised and developed my skills. Some tasks were slightly more repetitive, and therefore less enjoyable, but understanding how these fit into a larger project meant I still got a feeling of accomplishment having done them.
This is an amazing company to work for! The work is fun and the other engineers are very friendly. This is the dream job for me! I prefer being here compared to being at university!! The work life balance is very good as we have full flexi time which allows us to come and go as we please (obviously with our manager’s permission!)
Overall I would say that I really enjoyed my placement with Dstl. From the word go, I was given real work to complete and trusted to complete said work with very little 'hand holding'. I also went on a number of interesting trips with work, including being paid to attend Farnborough Airshow.
Highly; lots of projects to get involved with in varying depth. Everyone was very helpful and made me feel included. The atmosphere was surprisingly relaxing and the option to work from home every now and again was great.
I enjoyed it greatly. Dstl works in a way that the more you work there, the more interesting the tasking becomes and the more doors open up for you. It is unique to any other place of work. I had already worked here a year, and I feel after coming back for a summer I have learnt so much more despite it being in the same place.
My placement at DSTL was thoroughly exciting and enlightening. After just completing my first year at university this summer placement really helped me understand what engineering can be like in industry. I gained invaluable experience whilst earning money.
DSTL provided a highly enjoyable placement. The team I was placed in was friendly and helpful, consistently on hand to provide support as and when necessary. The work was interesting and (even more importantly) useful, it was a long way off merely photocopying and making tea. Furthermore, there were extensive opportunities to get involved in other areas of the organisation, giving me a great ability to tailor my placement as I desired. In conclusion I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and would strongly recommend a DSTL placement to anyone interested.
The working experience as a whole has been great. The work started relatively slow, however was necessary to ensure I could get up to speed with how the company works. Once I was settled, I was busy for the majority of the summer, being tasked with various projects which were both necessary and interesting. The social side was also fantastic, living with 7 other interns meant there was also something going on in the evenings and weekends.
Really enjoyed it! I was limited due to security issues, but was able to work on unclassified issues that I feel is still valued. The tasks were stimulating and interesting and I feel like ive actually learnt a lot abou the topics I was studying and researching. Having seen parts of what other people are doing it all seems like I will enjoy It when I get proper clearance.
The placement was very fun, the work was fairly interesting and varied so I was never bored and was able to participate in work trips and equipment testing. The placement year was further boosted by the fact that the company put all new starters and students in touch with each other to boost the social aspect.
I enjoyed my placement very much, it gave me the opportunity to work on some very interesting topics and work with a great team who all got on with each other great. There were a few harder times, but everyone was very welcoming and helpful which made the whole process very enjoyable.
With a great variation of work in either the lab, office or out in the field, there are always opportunities to develop both your interpersonal skills and putting skills developed throughout university into real life practical applications. Working within the Canine & Biosystems team within Dstl, it's been an exciting to open up a new route through science which I had never previously considered and it's been a fantastic opportunity to be involved in such a developing, yet critical development of science and defence.
The placement was a great experience. I had the chance to work on lots of interesting projects with people of different technical backgrounds. I had the opportunity to not only work with my team but with others as well. Furthermore, there company has lots of opportunities for away trips to see some of what there work has accomplished as well as plenty of courses to aid development.
I really enjoyed my placement, the projects that I took part in where really interesting and the work is very fulfilling because of the direct impact it has on the UK's defense, ultimately saving lives. Outside of work, colleagues and other placement students/graduates also organised plenty of social events. With hindsight I would definitely choose a work placement at DSTL again.
I've enjoyed my year at DSTL and think it's a good place to do a placement year; I don't think I've ever dreaded going to work on a Monday - surely the highest praise you could give regarding work? haven't covered everything I would've liked to have when I started but I've worked on a variety of things and improved many technical skills.
I found my placement year quite enjoyable, as I met a ton of lovely and interesting people, keen to get involved and share their knowledge and experience with others. I enjoyed my tasks and I felt valued as an employee. However, I found that I had to fight with upper management just to get things done, as the Civil Service system has a ton of superfluous people that exist just to make your work take longer.
