Illumina is a fantastic employer who really cares about employee satisfaction. We were entitled to all the same generous benefits as the full-time staff which helped us feel really valued. The placement itself was managed really well, from the induction, support, and opportunity to complete an important and interesting project as well as a short project offsite in a hospital.
My Placement was very enjoyable as I got the chance to learn and develop new skills in topics I would have never imagined. It was in no way repetitive and all my tasks had significance. The company environment is extremely inclusive with individuals at all levels being approachable and willing to invest there time in you.
I am so very glad I applied to Illumina! Each day at the internship was a pleasure and I felt hugely welcomed challenged during my employment. My colleagues were fantastic, friendly and proactive in their efforts to ensure I was sufficient challenged and professionally developed despite only a short internship.
Loved the placement. Given a huge amount of responsibility. Managers very approachable. Always had something to do and the work given to me was always useful to the business. Never once was I given "filler" work to pass time. Never once felt like an intern, treated just like everyone else, this is something I feel is quite important.
Working at Illumina was such a great experience. They have a sizable intern scheme, covering both 3 month summer internships and year long placements, meaning there were plenty of others in the same position. Due to this size, Illumina would run joint activities for us, to bond with each other, socialise and develop soft skills which would be useful for both our jobs and once we return to university. Specifically within the finance team, everyone was so friendly and approachable, that everyday in the office was exxciting and I got the opportunity to collaborate with many, making it both fun and interesting.
The work was challenging and employees helpful and friendly. I didn't want to feel like a placement student and certainly didn't feel this which really made the placement feel less like a placement and actually like a job which paired with projects that actually made an impact to the company made the placement one of the best decision for my degree and start of my career.
I have thoroughly enjoyed working at Illumina for my one year placement. I very much expected to be given the monotonous jobs as an intern but that has not been the case at all - I have been allowed to create, run, manage and improve my own projects that have a company wide impact while gaining exposure to many different business areas. Very happy with my experience.
