The programme was offering a sandwich year placement within the Information Technology and Shared Services team at Siemens UK. During the programme I was exposed to a range of business and technology challenges. I was asked to work collaboratively with international teams and be expected to identify local improvements to the way we conduct our business.
Before starting my internship I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but in the end the experiences I had as well as the people I met during this time far outweighed any expectations I could have dreamed up. Although at the time I was only a summer intern I was treated like a member of the team and as an equal. The work and projects I was given were challenging, interesting and fun and I don't recall having one dull moment.
My placement was a great opportunity to build on what I had already learnt at uni and use it on real projects for Siemens customers. I also got to learn how to use a similar CAD software to what I had used at uni, and built up on the use of Matlab for data analysis.
I enjoyed a few projects and the training events however most of the days I was given administrative tasks which I didn't enjoy because I felt that they didn't really give me the opportunity to develop many transferable skills. Overall the placement didn’t meet most of my initial expectations.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my year at Siemens. I have been given plenty of opportunity to work on a variety of different projects which I have found both interesting and challenging. The working environment though demanding is very welcoming and everyone in my team was happy to help me with any difficulty I had.
I enjoyed it an incredible amount! I was challenged every day, got to travel frequently, learned something new every time I completed an exciting project or task and was given some amazing training opportunities that gave me new perspectives on the way I work and why; you can't ask for much more than that.
I have REALLY enjoyed my placement year at Siemens. I was able to work on various projects and with different people who are experts in their field. I gained vital work experience which has equipped me with the right ammunition of my future as an Engineer. I would recommend a year in the industry to anyone and most of all a year with Siemens. You will never regret it.
I think that my placement year went really well. I gained many new technical skills but the more important thing in my opinion is that I was able to greatly develop my teamworking and communication skills. This placement also enabled me to get used to how a large business works which will greatly help me in my future career.
