The placement was kept interesting as I was given a large range of work to complete during the placement, I was also very surprised by the amount of responsibilities given during the placement year. Opportunities to go on workshops abroad to countries such as Spain makes work life much more exciting.
My internship with Siemens was hugely beneficial to me not only on a professional level but also regarding skill development. Having studied Business with Marketing Management at University I was slightly daunted with entering an engineering industry however, there are always jobs to do that require general business skills. I was given an internal project which involved implementing new modifications to 130 Gas Turbines located all over the world. This was a great experience to develop my communication skills globally and it was also quite an eye opener in terms of how practical business differs from the textbooks at University. All in all, I was given considerable ownership of my work and independence which enabled me to develop significantly which has given me greater confidence to do well in my final year at uni and apply for a graduate scheme.
I thoroughly enjoyed the projects I was working on and the work I have been doing has been quite varied through out my placement. Having experienced organisational change during the middle of my placement, I was exposed more to the operational recruitment side of talent acquisition and my manager gave me the opportunity to learn more about how this works and even supported me to go on an internal training course for hiring managers. Although I enjoyed the work I had to do, I did have to re-prioritize at times due to the amount of admin tasks that I was required to do. This could sometimes get quite repetitive and complicated as these tasks required a lot of follow up such as raising purchase orders to ensure that the payment is made. However, this has been noted and I am aware that this may not be so much the case for future interns.
I will definitely say it has been one of the most enjoyable work experiences I have had in a long while. I have had huge exposure to different departments within the business as well as contact with key external stakeholders. I have developed significant transferable skills during this short period and it can only serve me well in my future career. My professionalism at the work place has taken a new shape and I can confidently say that I' m a better person in terms of commitment, work ethics, teamwork etc. now than when I started 10 months ago.
The team were very welcoming and friendly allowing for an excellent environment around the office. The nature of the work I was doing was challenging and interesting meaning I found interest in learning around the topic. There were also a lot of opportunities to get involved inside and outside of my work with activities to make the year more interesting as well.
The placement gave me an opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes at a big company. The biggest thing I have gained is recognizing the importance of the psychological aspect to work, how people behave within an organization. Here I have seen the importance of networking and communication skills to create long-term and positive relationships and how this can influence the work I do and the positions people are able to go to within the company. I have also had the opportunity to travel for business, meaning I have met people fro all kinds of positions and backgrounds and at the same time seen the different areas in engineering at Siemens. From Healthcare to Energy Management.
It started out really rough and I didn't think I would get on with it at all. Something clicked after a month or so and I came out of my shell, now (currently 8 1/2 months in!) I have to say I enjoy every aspect of it. The people are kind and I have definitely made some friends here; they are a joy to work with.
Really enjoyed my time here at Siemens as the team I was working in was friendly, helpful and most of all they trusted my ability to get jobs done. Also the level of responsibility I was given was high which is likely to benefit me in future as this allowed me to gain vast experience in areas I wouldn’t have been exposed to without this level of responsibility.
It was very good, they gave me a lot to do and my placement was split up throughout the year. My Line manager was very helpful with all of my problems and all me and my colleagues got along very well. We have regular team meetings to ensure everything is running smoothly.
Working at Mentor Graphics has been an enriching and fulfilling experience for me. Working in a relaxed and open environment, you are immediately integrated into the team of talented software engineers and QA engineers. What i enjoy most about the placement is the relaxed atmosphere with welcoming colleagues.
I am currently undergoing my placement at Mentor Graphics. I can honestly say that I am thoroughly enjoining it, the whole working environment is fantastic and I already feel that I have learnt so many things which I can take into my final year and the rest of my career.
