My role was to provide technical support to Tata Steel businesses regarding process optimisation and environmental compliance. Further into the placement, as I was involved in more projects, my roles and responsibilites increased. Common actions involved updating team members and administrative trackers regarding project progress. I would also regularly collaborate with operations personnel to investigate and assess processes with the aim of determining environmental compliance and/or operational effectiveness/efficiency.
As an annual mechanical placement student the role consisted of working within different departments (facilities, fuels, drawing office, Work shops...) and across the different production lines on site. The role helped to develop and understanding of what the different departments do and also allowed you to pick up lots of different jobs and slight larger project type work working within the departments and across the lines. Various engineering related jobs from designing, 3d printing and document prep to surveys of plant, physically going on the lines to problem solve and data analysis.
I support internal and community-based communications. On the day to day, I manage 3 of our social media accounts and coordinate, curate and create content for these channels. I produce copy for internal and external print publications and edit those from time to time. I manage central email communications and host weekly planning meetings. I assist with the community programme and distribute donations and payments accordingly. Etc.
Part of the new product development team, conducted various lab work or modelling to facilitate these NPD projects. Was also involved in day to day problem solving around issues arising from the production line. Long term project focused on natural gas consumption and carbon dioxide production modelling.
Thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of my time. The team were very accommodating and allowed me a lot of scope to try new things as well as taking me under their wing and progressing me as an individual. I have learnt plenty and had regular review sessions to ensure I am on track.
The placement was good with a range of projects to keep me busy, though getting to that point took a little while with a slow start. The people there were in the main very friendly and eager to help me get involved in learning as much about the company as they could.
The company as whole is very interesting. Having tours of 2 Tata steel plants was very enjoyable. I was assigned a project as part of my 12 week placement. Although the task being asked of myself was straightforward and simple, getting information/ items from others where the difficult parts. Often this made the project a struggle, as someone who wants to do the best they can it's hard when there are so many issues stacked against you.
