What was the interview process like?

This involved submitting my CV, code and online tests, an assessment day with 2 interviews – one technical the other general – a group exercise and short personal presentation; daunting but a good experience.

How much responsibility do you have?

After the first 7 weeks of training we were thrown into the deep end, answering phone calls and supporting customers straight away. I was given ownership of a group of customers to support along with ad hoc support for other customers as required.

What advice would you give to students applying for your role?

Be confident and demonstrate your relevant skills at interview, assessment days and interviews are good experience for the future.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

I have learnt a lot about different companies and their processes. I even had the opportunity to go on site to 2 different customers. Seeing how the changes I made helped the customer was a great feeling.

What has been your biggest challenge?

I was not a confident person, and you need to be to talk to the customers on the phone.

What has been your biggest challenge?

During the year I went from handing calls to a colleague straight away, to dealing with customers, helping them and knowing what I was doing.

Describe your biggest achievement.

In the first weeks after training one of my customers had an issue printing reports. I worked with the development team to fix this, creating a new label monitor and templates and installing this on the customer’s live system.

How has this experience exceeded your expectations?

Everybody was very welcoming, even the directors knew the students by name after the first couple of weeks. I did not expect a placement to offer me such a wide range of experience and responsibility; if you do something good, people remember it.

What is the office atmosphere like?

Friendly, everyone in the office knows everyone else, many living together in house shares. Communicating with the team is easy when you need help, no matter their seniority, they just offer help and this then becomes a learning opportunity.

What activities are there outside of work?

There is an office football team and Friday drinks at the pub. It’s a very friendly and social company, a lot of people socialise together outside of work. There is a weekend away for the Christmas party every year.

How promising are the graduate prospects?

Lighthouse is a growing company, the chances of returning as a graduate with them are high. Many of the current employees were placement students at Lighthouse before graduating university and joining the team.
