Junior Software Engineer

Mohamed - Cognito

Computer Science and IT

Placement (10 Months+)

What was the application process like?

The application process was very straightforward: all I had to do was submit an online form along with a copy of my CV and a cover letter - I was then invited to an assessment centre at their office in January.

What was the interview process like?

At the Cognito office I undertook three written tests (problem-solving, technical and psychometric), a team exercise using LEGO, and finally an interview with two team managers.

What advice would you give to students applying for your role?

Do it now! Apply as early as possible and take the time to learn as much as you can about the role and company. During the assessment centre demonstrate your technical aptitude, make it clear why you want to want to work at Cognito and just be yourself.

How much responsibility do you have?

Considering that I am the most junior member of the team I was upheld to the same standards as any other member of my team. In addition to coding, I've been involved in training new staff, designing complicated features & integration testing new products.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

I love coding and being able to work on new projects every day that directly impact the success of our customers is a dream come true.

What has been your biggest challenge?

The technical aspects of the job were very challenging, but I think my biggest challenge was learning how to communicate my ideas across to more experienced developers and other non-technical people.

How has this experience exceeded your expectations?

I didn't expect to have so much fun during this year! I've had the pleasure of learning from some truly awesome people, implementing new ideas and directly contributing to the success of our customers. I've grown as a developer here.

What is the office atmosphere like?

Cognito has an open office-plan which is very welcoming, and the general atmosphere is calm, enjoyable and most of all busy.

What activities are there outside of work?

Outside of work there is monthly board game nights, a huge Christmas party and plenty of lunchtime excursions.

How promising are the graduate prospects?

Very appealing – the company is striving to adopt the latest technologies and I am really looking forward to getting involved when I return after my final year of uni.
