Six study tips for students leaving revision to the last minute

It can be a particularly stressful time during exams, especially when you have to cram in the answers to a lot of different questions.

Every now and then, we can all be guilty of a bit of procrastination. However, if you put things off and don’t get out of your procrastination rut then things can get worse – especially when it comes to revision.

So if you have decided to leave your revising to the very last minute and are looking for some survival tips, we’ve come up with six tricks that can turn your revising from no-show into know-how.

Plan your revision

First things first, make yourself a study guide with a proper routine mapped out.

Once you’ve come up with your revision plan, make sure you’re strict and stick to it. It’s also crucial that you allocate yourself some time to chill and relax – the last thing you want in the lead up to your exams is even more stress.

Prioritise your weakest subjects

Write a list of areas that you are pretty confident about and also one for the things that you could do with dedicating more time to. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to see what needs your attention the most.

If you do the worst and hardest bits first, then once you’ve mastered them you’ll be able to focus your time on your favourite parts.

Record your revision notes and read them out

While it may sound pretty embarrassing to have to listen to your own voice, it can actually be a really great way to remember things.

Find time to read out and record your lecture notes. If you’re at the gym or driving, chances are you won’t have access to your notes, so by having them recorded you’ll be able to listen wherever you are.

There are numerous audio-recording applications out there, both for smartphones and computers, so there really is no excuse.

Draw it out

Some of us are visual learners and the prospect of going through a bundle of notes can be entirely off-putting. If this is the case, then diagrams may be the way forward.

Drawing diagrams can make facts and information stand out much more, and many find it easier to recall images when under pressure.

A good example is to create spider diagrams or mind maps with your notes – put the main information in the middle and then have little notes or key points branching out from this.

Eat healthily

We’re not saying that eating an apple will instantly provide you with all the answers, but it will help you keep your mind stimulated and energised.

During revision time, many people will jump straight into the easy option of takeaways, but junk food will only leave you feeling sluggish afterwards. Stick to brain foods such as eggs, blueberries, broccoli and nuts.

Also, try to avoid coffee and drink plenty of water so that you stay hydrated. Water also helps you to improve your brain function, so it’s win-win really.

Turn off your distractions

Having your phone or tablet by your side will only serve as temptation, so try to make your revision sessions strictly no-phone zones.

If you want to go about it properly, there are even applications out there for your PC or Mac that will block all use of social networks and other websites likely to cause distraction.

Everyone has their own way of revising that works for them. Find the one that works best for you and go forth as the fountain of all knowledge.
