Job Title: ICU Representative - Communtiy Safety

★★★★★★★★★★
The Role
- Role Description
I started of working in the one of the CORE player support teams at Jagex. Mainly dealing with password requests and offence appeals sent in by players.
Soon after i moved into the Investigations in the Community Unit (ICU) as a Lead General support curator where i helped lead the General Support team which was responsible for replying to player emails. I also worked on various projects which helped to improve communication to the players.
I then moved to the Community Safety Team where i dealt with the more sensitive issues and helped to ensure that the game was a safe environment.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Placements are treated exactly the same as every other member of staff. The quality of work given is no different and you have just as much of a chance to move into other areas of the business.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
My Team Leader i worked with took interest in me as an individual and not just as a member of their team. They wanted to know what my aims and goals were so that they could help me achieve them and was often asked if there were any other skills i wanted to develop.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
As player support work 24/7 there is always plenty of work to be done.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was given a lot of responsibility. In my General Support role i was leading a team of 30 curators. If they had any difficult issues i would be the person that they went to.
As the Community Safety role is very sensitive there is a great deal of responsibility involved with almost every aspect of the role.
If you have proved yourself and are willing there are almost extra responsibilities you can take on. For example I also took charge of managing the ROTA for the ICU department.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
As a Forensic Placement working in the Community Safety team allowed me to gain an insight into investigations, working with law enforcement and dealing with data protection. This will be valuable for the last year of my degree.
I've developed many skills and attended workshops and seminars set up by Jagex that will assist me in the future.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The atmosphere was always very casual, with most people wearing jeans and hoodies. While we dressed casually and could joke around everyone was still very professional and worked very hard.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
While we didn't stick exactly to the timeline that was set up at the beginning of the year, this was because it was changed to suit our needs as everyone gained new roles and moved into different departments.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Company Parties/Events
- Healthcare/Dental
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I have been offered a position at Jagex when i finish my degree.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
With 25 other placement there was always plenty of people to socialize with. My department also went out for dinner together once a week.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Cambridge is a pricey place to live. Rent is almost the same price as in London. Drinks and Taxi's are also more expensive then in most cities.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
As a small city it wasn't the best but if you look around you probably find something to suit your tastes.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
I would highly recommend coming to Jagex for a placement year. Right from the beginning you’re treated the same as every other employee. The only difference for placements is that we are given extra seminars and workshops to develop more skill and really make the most of the year. If you see something that isn’t working or a process that could be improved, you’re encouraged to make suggestions or even make working on a solution your own project.
You are given regular feedback which allow you to keep track of your progress. Team Leaders are always interested in developing each person in their team. If you communicate with them your goals and aspirations they will do everything they can to help you achieve them.
There are plenty of opportunities available to move into other departments and teams. Particularly at the beginning of the year when all of the previous year’s placements go back to university and their positions open up.
There is a great atmosphere at Jagex and great benefits. If you work a bank holiday there are always fun events or competitions where you can win prizes and free food and treats. We receive free gym membership and fruit delivered to our desks every day. On top of this, each quarter each team has a team-jolly. This year I’ve been to an archery range, on a Segway track and to the Cinema with my team. I’ve also been on a placement Jolly. There are also the Company Jollies at Christmas and During the summer which are amazing.
While it’s a laid back and casual environment, everyone works extremely hard and is dedicated to their work. If you’re willing to work hard you can achievement a great amount.
