Job Title: Billing Support

The Role
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
The phrase "Work hard, play hard" comes to mind. I've thoroughly enjoyed my placement year and it's unbelievable the amount of effort Jagex puts into the placement scheme to ensure that we as placements get the most out of it, whilst contributing towards the company goals and enjoying ourselves in the process.
It's a fantastic company with bright, passionate and truly great people to work with.
To answer the initial question, I enjoyed it so much I can't wait to go back! - 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
A sense of purpose and value within the company is a great feeling. My colleagues (both permanent and placement) were very welcoming from day one and placements aren't treated any differently.
The quality of work produced is what counts and you can venture into other parts of the business if you have the drive and skills to do so. - 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
The placement scheme offers many (MANY) different courses and there are a variety of skills development programmes focusing on supporting the main assets within the company, it's employees.
My own team leader / head of my department also took an interest in my future aims / goals to help me prepare for what lies ahead. - 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Generally a good balance although this really depends on the team you're in and the current goals/targets of the team.
Occasionally you may feel a little overwhelmed with the work you've been given although this is just part of life and another obstacle to overcome.
There are time management courses you can attend which will help you to balance the load. - 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
During my 15 months at Jagex, I started out in one of the Core player support teams, helping players get back into game and improving on internal systems that help us keep our games safe and enjoyable.
Shortly after joining my core team, I moved into the billing team where I was a central part in helping customers with billing related problems and also providing analysis on membership data for my superiors.
Around 11 months into my placement I was offered the position of Shift Leader within the Billing Team, focusing on improving the support offered by the billing team and providing suggestions and reports / data analysis for the head of the department and also senior management.
In Jagex there are no differences between permanent and placement, we are all treated as one and if you have the passion, drive and commitment to succeed your manager will help you to do just that.
A couple more placements also received shift leader positions within their teams showing the high level of responsibility given to us and the belief Jagex has in the placement scheme. - 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Daily I find myself using the skills developed within my time at Jagex during my final year at university and also in general day to day life.
Overall, the training and support offered is phenomenally good and not something you should ever forget.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The office was always warm and welcoming, colleagues were helpful and friendly and the team building sessions (jollys) were great fun.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
The scheme is very well organised given the vast number of skills development sessions and placement specific sessions (including Q&A with senior management members) in place.
The induction and training is also exceptionally well put together given that there are I believe 25 or so placements every year. - 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Jagex understands that its employees are its greatest assets and they invest a lot of time and money in both placements and permanents.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Financial Bonus
- Company Parties/Events
- Healthcare/Dental
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Jagex offer placements the opportunity to become "ambassadors" where they are invited back to the company after they finish their degree.
Thankfully, I was one of the lucky few to be given this opportunity and I will certainly be accepting it.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Given that there are 25 or so placements each year, you're guaranteed to find the perfect group for you.
There were many after work meet ups :) - 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Cambridge isn't the cheapest place to live by far although the wage offered by Jagex is plenty to live off and go out socialising.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
There are lots of local pubs, clubs, cinemas, bowling etc....pretty much everything you need is there.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
It is what you make of it, get out there and have some fun.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Jagex is quite possibly one of the best companies you'll ever have the opportunity to work for. They're passionate about what they do, it's a fun and enjoyable place to work and the career paths are endless.
If you're looking to get your foot in the door of a games studio, what better place to start than player support at the UKs number 1 games developer.
The time and money they invest into you doesn't go unnoticed and you'll really develop as an employee and a person. I can guarantee that after having worked at Jagex you'll probably not want to leave.
If you're a potential placement interested in business, games, computing, languages or a vast number of other subjects, there's a place for you at Jagex.

Placement Year Questions & Answers
-
Hi there,
I'm hoping to sort a placement at Jagex for 2012 but I'm not sure where exactly to send my application. I've checked the Jagex website and followed the path for university placements but it brought me to the current vacancies section with no further information on placements.
My hope is you can point me in the right direction where I should send my application and the kind of information they'll want to see.
If you could provide me with any details at all I'd be extremely grateful. :)
Thanks
Craig

Hi Craig,
To apply for the role, after being taken back to the "Current vacancies", scroll down to "Player Support" and you'll be able to select "Industrial Placement – Player Support".
At the bottom of this page, simply hit "Apply" and you'll be taken to another page where you can upload your resume (CV) and cover letter.
They'll need a few personal details as well so they know how to contact you with updates on your application. As for the information Jagex would like to see, I can't give a definitive answer on that I'm afraid (I wasn't part of the recruitment team on my placement! :p), but try and express why you want to have your placement year at Jagex and what you're hoping to get out of it, and back this up with your CV showing what skills you have to help Jagex grow in return.
Hope that helps.
