Job Title: Player Support Representative
Overall Rated 8.1

The Role
- Role Description
Working in the customer service side of the business, the majority of my role was dealing with player's issues and solving them. Additional duties included Bug Tracking and Tech Support.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
Jagex is an enjoyable place to work with plenty to do. However. at times the queue-based work load can sometimes get a bit tedious.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Great relationships in the office, particularly as you work within a small team who you will always share the same shifts with.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
My Teamleader was brilliant and always pushing me to get the most of my placement year. Knowing that I wanted to get involved in the development side, she helped me to get some QA experience during the year.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Depending on the shift you worked, it could vary - day shifts are pretty quiet, while the late shift is a lot busier. However, there were usually additional pieces of work you could work on during these quiet periods, including your own project work if you had any.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
When you start at Jagex, you will start at the bottom with very little responsibility. However, almost all jobs are available to placement students which means you could gain additional curator roles or promotions depending on how well you did.
Essentially, it is up to you to make the most of your placement during the year. Those who work hard get rewarded and are more likely to get the better jobs.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
The bulk of the work I did was very specific to Jagex, however skills like time-management and experiencing QA are both skills that I can take away and use inside and outside of work in the future.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Brilliant atmosphere.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
The placement begins with 4 weeks training which allows you plenty of time to learn the job. During the course of the year there were several placement seminars, specifically set up to give industry advice to students. There were some problems during the year but on the great things about Jagex is they encourage you to give feedback and tell them what was wrong so they can improve in the future.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Jagex really do invest time and money into you giving you plenty of opportunities to get as much experience out of the year as possible.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Financial Bonus
- Company Parties/Events
- Healthcare/Dental
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Was offered a job after finishing the year and will be returning soon after completing university.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
With around 30-40 placements the year I was there, there are plenty of opportunities to socialise in and out of work.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Cambridge can be an expensive area to live, particularly with rent, so it can be important to manage your money at times. However, the salary is really good for a placement position so it balances out overall.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Quite a decent night-life.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
With company parties, quarterly team-socials and a pub a 5 minute walk away there was normally always something you could do.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Jagex is what you make of it: if you come in and do just the job, you probably won't have a good placement year. If you push to prove yourself by going for extra responsibilities or better job positions this is when Jagex really shine as a company as very little is unachievable as a placement.
If you are a programming student, please be aware that while I was there they did not allow placements to work in development positions due to the long training time of their custom coding language. However, this may have changed since I left.
