The Role
I had brilliant time on my placement. I was given a great variety of work and everyone was always extremely helpful in trying to explain everything. Also everyone in the office went out of their way to be friendly and welcoming to me and to make me feel like part of the team even in the short amount of time that I was there.
Always thanked and given credit for any work which I had completed.
I had training sessions when I first arrived to introduce me to the basics of the job and all of the software which I would be using. Then whenever I was given a job someone would always take the time to fully explain how to do things and also why they were being done. Also I was sitting on a desk next to a new graduate from last year in order for me to be able to ask any small questions which I had when completing tasks.
There were some days when I didn't have a huge amount to do, but whilst I was there I did get to a wide variety of jobs.
I was given the same responsibility as a graduate is given when they first arrive. I was allowed to work on jobs by myself but obviously everything was checked by someone more senior before it got sent out to a client.
Given me a much greater understanding of what an actuary does on day to day basis and I have learnt an incredible amount which will hopefully benefit me in a job after I graduate and in my future career. It has helped me to further understand the job of an actuary.
The Company
The general office atmosphere was very friendly, I always felt comfortable going to talk to people and ask for anything which I needed. I felt that people went out of their way to make me welcome when I first arrived, always inviting me out for lunch and getting me involved in any social events outside the office.
I felt that it was quite well organised. There was a good support system for asking for help, and I knew well in advance where I was going to be and who to ask for at the start of the internship.
I was given similar if slightly less intensive training as a new graduate would receive. I felt that the company did invest a lot of time into training me up in order for me to be able to complete the tasks that I was given.
Company Parties/Events
I would love to have a graduate job with the company and as far as I am aware this is a distinct possibility and there is a job for me at the end as long as I have performed well enough and I have enjoyed it.
The Culture
There were only two interns in my office so there wasn't a huge social scene but there were drinks most Fridays with other associates.
I was commuting from my university house in Leeds, I'm not really sure?
Due to the long commute I didn't go out often but when I did it seemed like there was a good nightlife with lots of bars and clubs. The office was right in the city centre so there was plenty to do.
There were a few socials whilst I was there and drinks most Friday evenings but nothing other than that.
