Overall Rated 8.6

★★★★★★★★★

The Role

1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

It was a good job with rotating tasks and a great experience.

2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

Felt quite valued. My work was used by different departments of the business and even when to Senior Management and the CEO.

3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
★★★★★★★★★★

Rated 10/10

My manager was incredibly supportive. He was always there to give advice or help and was never too busy for me.

4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

When I started I was quite busy, but then I started to hand over my work to other people so I was left with a lot less towards the end. It was some monthly tasks and ad-hoc work towards the end.

5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

We had responsibility since we started. We were given real work to do which had an input in the business and was used by all different levels. Some of my work helped to re-price our products while others parts found and analysed trends.

6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

I learnt many skills and definitely developed as a person. This was my first real job in such a professional atmosphere and I think it made me more experienced. My interpersonal skills improved as well as my communication and technical ability. These will definitely be an integral part of my success in my final year and beyond.

The Organisation

7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
★★★★★★★★★★

Rated 10/10

The atmosphere in my team and office was lovely. It was quite laid back and we all shared jokes. It was a friendly and approachable team that showed endless support.

8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

The placement scheme was very well organised. Our induction to the business set the ground rules, I had a handover to introduce me to all the tasks I would need to familiarise myself with. And we had good contact with the Intern Coordinator to ensure all was well for us.

9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

The company invests heavily in each and every one of the interns. You go on 3 core courses: Influencing, Presentation and Facilitation. Each of which help you in your placement and further. There are also many optional courses to suit your needs, some of which are online and others which are classroom based. These help you to polish up on areas where you think you could improve.

10. What were the perks on your work placement?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

  • Sports and Social Club
  • Company Parties/Events
  • Healthcare/Dental
11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

They are appealing. I would definitely apply for the graduate scheme as my year here ha given me a valuable insight. It seems to be a well structured program which will open up many doors.

Other Information

12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
★★★★★★★★★★

Rated 10/10

Yes. We did many things together from bowling, to drinks, to parties. We also celebrated birthdays and other occassions. All of the interns were a fantastic bunch of people and we were lucky enough to have many opportunities to mix and get to know each other very well.

13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

The cost of living was typical of London. But less than Central London as we were in the suburb. £4 for lunch would be typical. We worked in Harrow which has great facilities for socialising, lots of pubs, bars and restaurants!

14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

As mentioned before, there was a lot to do from pubs to restaurants. But also the travel facilities were great so Central London was never too far away.

15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
★★★★★★★★☆☆

Rated 8/10

Yes. There were different clubs for everything from sports to knitting! There was also a great encouragement for volunteering.

In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?

GE is a fantastic company to work for which will not only look great on your CV but will also invest in you with time and money. GE will support your development and make sure that you take many things away with you.

Question asked by a RateMyPlacement user on 21st January 2011

Hi Zak,

I was an intern in 2007/08 so things might have changed since then. What role did you apply for? I was in the Pricing team.

I had a different assessment day to the usual but the full day consists of a small intro then a 2 on 1 interview, a logic test and 2 group exercises. The interview can go really well if the people are nice, in my time there I only met a couple of people that liked to trick you the rest were lovely.

We wern't retested but we did a logic test. That was quite tricky and there was time pressure but I don't think they expect you to finish. From what I heard afterwards only one person has finished it in the time given and scored 100% so don't be disheartened if you can't finish.

The first group exerise at the time was with the whole group. You had to imagine you were stranded on a desert island and rank several items in order of importance. In this it doesn't matter what your answers are they just look for how you work in a large group. You need to have goo input without dominating the group.

In the second group exercise you work in smaller groups and make a bridge using some basic materials. Keep a check on time because it seems to be something everyone ignores! Again they are looking to see how you work.

The interview for me was the best part. The people were really friendly and although they did ask some tough questions it seemed more like a conversation than an interview. They don't ask financial questions. They will want to know how good you are technically, your Excel skills don't need to be advanced but if they are intermediate you will do good. It's definitely one of the things they would like. I was asked standard q's like why GE, what do i know about GE, why did i choose my uni and course, what are my strengths and weaknesses, where do I see myself in 5 years time, etc... Ask questions like "what do you think the main challenges are for GE over the next 5 years?"

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Good luck!

Miran
