The Role
- Role Description
Worked as a research scientist on a lab project with the aim of scale up to a line production. The aim of the project was to solve a problem with a current product and make it more efficient.
At the end of the project I wrote a paper for Corus, which was then submitted for a competition
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
-really fun summer - helped that I already knew the research group from the previous year
- very interesting work scientifically - we had to take a process which had been performed in other labs, recreate it and allow for scale up to line production - 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
- everyone at Corus was fantastic to me, from the cleaners to the bosses and the people there made it exciting
- sometimes felt as though some of my ideas and comments weren't fully taken on because of the way industry wanted to go, but this is probably the case with most industry driven projects - 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
- I could approach anyone when needed and I had daily contact with my supervisors
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
- there were times when there was a lot of work all at once and other times when there was very little due to inconsistent materials from suppliers
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
- along with a co-worker, I directed my research towards analysis which I would find interesting
- I proposed my own interpretation of the science behind the mechanism we were based our design upon - 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
- learned how to use various bits of equipment including SEM, EIS and IR heating
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
really nice atmosphere - eveyone v chatty
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
I managed to extend my placement very easily
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
not so much, i was taught how to do certain analysis but this was to carry out my job
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Subsidised Canteen
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Graduate pay isn't fantastic but there are added perks like bonuses and competitions to enter
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
the guys often went to the pub in the evenings and were always up for a laugh
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Chester is relatively cheap and if you live in chester it is v easy to cycle to work
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Rosies+Cruise in chester
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
