The Role
- Role Description
I was placed on the divisional marketing department and my main priority was to construct mailing campaigns for existing customers and attempt to gain information into their buying habits and behaviours.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
Well enjoyed it and got so much out of my time there. It completely changed my outlook towards business and definitely helped me in gaining my first class degree.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
The team around me were great to me and took to me like a new employee. I felt I could talk to any of them and they were always quick to praise me for any good work which helped me settle in quickly.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
Every week I would have an appointment with the learning and development team who would offer me constant support and guidance, not just for my time at John Lewis but also for university and my ultimate career.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Never too busy or never nothing to do. I enjoyed how the work was all spaced out so you never felt too rushed and did a substandard job.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Apart from being trusted to do my job correctly and complete my tasks I wasn't given any huge amount of responsibility.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I totally attribute my first class degree to my time at John Lewis as it was so motivating and innovating to me.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
I got on so well with everyone and always felt at ease to go to any of them if I wanted to talk about something or had a problem.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Brilliantly. Never experienced any problems or niggles.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
I attended one staff training day which was helpful but other than that I had to learn as I worked.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Financial Bonus
- Company Parties/Events
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I have applied for the graduate scheme and am awaiting a response.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Got on really well with a few of the placement lads and also with a group of the full time employees.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
I am originally from the Midlands so I was shocked at London prices! Very expensive compared to up north.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
The nightlife is, admittedly, good, but it's nothing revolutionary compared to other places I've been.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
I went on so many day trips and nights out with people I met at John Lewis. Football games, theatre, bowling, cinema, pub crawl - there were so many great times!
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Brilliant placement, snap it up if you get offered the chance!
