    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • In 10 weeks only Morgan Stanley manages to offer to the Interns a full overview of what it means working for them. Apart from the work itself, the possibility to know how the other departments work and the informal events organized along the Internship make you fully understand the MS culture.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued. I was not given any of the traditional 'intern' tasks but was instead treated exactly how a new graduate would be. I felt an integral part of the team from my first day and felt as though my work mattered.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a personal mentor and a buddy who constantly supported me. I had regular feedback and catch-ups during the internship and always felt supported.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was always busy. I liked this, as I felt I was learning a lot and it made my time spent feel worthwhile. If I did have any time spare I always had tasks to do such as completing compliance tasks.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a good amount of responsibility. I was able to take charge in my task by asking lots of questions and going in with an enthusiastic time. At the same time, I felt I was always supported in case the responsibility became too much.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt the importance of networking skills which I believe will help me not just with my degree but throughout my career. I also learnt how to use Excel which will be very important and useful throughout my career as well.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere was very positive. People seemed to be enjoying the job they were doing. There was a good balance between hard work but also friendly office chat. There was not a feeling of hierarchy that you get in some offices. Everyone was approachable and there was communication between all levels.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The structure of the internship was well set up. There was a week of training and two 3 week desk allocations based on an introduction day we had in April where we met desks. The final rotation was decided mid-internship and we had some input as to our preferences here. There was also bi-weekly mini-rotations which ensured everyone made their way across the bank. The gem, I felt, were the Managing Director Introductions organised by HR. These familiarised us with senior management and gave the internship a very open feel.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was an initial week of training followed by ongoing excel skills. The week of training was just to get everyone on roughly the same level as there were a lot of non-finance degree backgrounds.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The organisation is a very appealing organisation to work for. It is very well respected in the industry and definitely invests in it's staff. I see it as a great company that I aspire to work at.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, during the training period we got to know the other placement students well and we kept in contact throughout the placement both through the office communicator and through social events. There was also a good social scene with colleagues already at the firm, we had a staff meal and team breakfasts!

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living was quite high as it was in central London but then you are financially rewarded accordingly. The company paid any extra expenses occurred so getting to work was no more expensive than it would have been elsewhere. Socialising was expensive but I did not have too much extra time to go to restaurants etc.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife was very good, from much more chilled bars to international nightclubs there was definitely something for everyone's taste.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes there were. I regularly met up with other placement students out of work at bars. There was also time to catch up with my friends not at work and I was never expected to work at the weekend.
