Job Title: Assistant Brand Manager Intern
Overall Rated 7.5
★★★★★★★★☆☆
The Role
- Role Description
Organising and executing various tasks centred around the success of a particular brand in the P&G portfolio.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
The working environment (people & office) was brilliant. Full stars were lost mostly for the role itself not being ideal for me along with a few management inconsistencies.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
A few colleagues felt 'like family' whilst others were definite strangers.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
Support and feedback was excellent and frequent! The availability of this was slightly diminished near the end though.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Any deviation in work-life balance was voluntary. It's a strong selling point of the internship in my opinion.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Huge responsibility!
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
"Feedback is a gift."
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
My team was very professional and busy, but the overall atmosphere is easygoing. People said it was just a 'high pressure' time of the year, but realistically that is always the case for an FMCG company.
Despite the daily working vibe, there were random fun events like sports day, charity sales etc. - 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Not seamless, but close.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
I don't know how many more training lunches, booklets, websites, meetings you could possibly cram into 10 weeks!
However, this is a double edged sword in that much of the training could have been much more relevant to my project responsibilities. - 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- National Travel
- Company Parties/Events
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- Working from home
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
FMCG is an exciting industry and P&G are definitely big players in the field - massive budgets and a really varied portfolio of products ensure lots of different opportunities to experience. Working alongside great people is another very strong appeal.
Ultimately, excitement in the job roles themselves is the crucial missing element that puts me off longterm future career prospects.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
All the interns in the country train together initially before being split off into role-specific training. Combined with an internal messaging system, this makes for some awesome socials and new friends.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Surrey = expensive.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
It's not too far from London...
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Not many of the opportunities were viable for an intern, but there were some informal sports clubs available.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
The marketing role at P&G is not to be confused with the 'sexy' creative roles of advertising agencies or similar misconceptions. Marketing at P&G is management; a lifelong skill and a role that is extremely difficult to get experience in as a student. In that respect the placement was invaluable to my personal development despite any grievances about lifelong career suitability. Furthermore, the working environment was incredible. Great people make a huge difference to whatever you're doing whether you *love* it or not.

Online tests & pre interview test - practice lots to increase your speed, not necessarily you're ability (I'm sure your competent)
Get your CV looked at by someone who works there for advice.
Interview - be prepared for almost any "give an example of" question. Make sure your answers are clearly structured (CAR context action results). Also, be confident *almost* to the point of smugness if you're going for marketing. Be proud of achievements, show enthusiasm, smile. Also, remember names - you may well end up working with/for who you meet.
Good luck!
