Job Title: Summer Intern - Global Private Bank
Overall Rated 9.9
★★★★★★★★★★
The Role
- Role Description
As a Summer Intern, I worked with the Risk team within HSBC Global Private Bank for 10 weeks. My main responsibilities included writing reports, contributing to risk analysis and research, compiling presentations, using databases and attending meetings in an observational role.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I was happy to have been trusted with considerable responsibilities as an intern, and I felt I was undertaking valuable work for the business and adding value. I was constantly challenged and given the opportunity to explore different areas of the Private Bank. My work was varied, interesting and extremely enjoyable.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
My colleagues made my internship one of the best experiences of my life - it was wonderful to work with such an enthusiastic, organized, close-knit and professional group of people. Work was taken seriously, but a considerable effort was made to integrate me into the team and make me feel welcome. I really feel I made many friends and valuable contacts within the company.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I worked with my line managers on a daily basis, and was constantly interacting with them - any support or advice I needed was easily available, and freely given.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
I always had interesting work to complete, which ensured the days went quickly, and I was constantly occupied. I never found myself either bored or over-worked, I was given just the right amount to do in order to optimize my performance.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was working on reports that were being actively used in the business for risk assessment - the level of responsibility was as much as it could have been for an intern. My work was always moderated and checked, but my contributions were encouraged and valued.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
The team working skills, and ability to experience a real working environment were invaluable. The internship allowed me to gauge what is expected of an employee at a prestigious and global institution.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
I had a huge amount of fun - but always within a professional environment. I felt incredibly comfortable around my team, and was able to mix fun, outside of work events, and serious work effortlessly.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
We were given a week of intensive training (technical and soft skills), before hitting our desks for 9 weeks. During those 9 weeks, Human Resources offered constant support. There were regular assessments and appraisals to encourage us to gain the most from our internships. There were events organized every week to allow us to explore all areas of the Global Business.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
HSBC went to considerable trouble and expense to train us well, provide us with networking events, and ensure our happiness.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Financial Bonus
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
As a global organization, there are always exciting and challenging opportunities to be pursued.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
There were constant meet-ups at weekends, and regular social events. Many of the interns have stayed in touch and still go out together.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
London is expensive, but the rewards more than compensate.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
The whole of London is your 'Oyster', so there is always plenty to do: including a very vibrant nightlife.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Yes, usually at least one activity a week.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
For anyone who is interested in banking or finance, HSBC would be a great place to apply.
