    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • An internship sometimes ends up with the intern working on his own on a small side project, without much interaction with his colleagues. This was not the case with my internship at MS. In my case, I was part of a Scrum team working on a larger, new project. As a consequence, I was an active part of my team and was involved in discussing design choices with my colleagues, which was extremely valuable and beneficial for my experience

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were always available for assistance, should I require any help from them. They placed value on my contribution to the project and offered positive feedback for my work.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Both my supervisor and my manager were very helpful. My supervisor's guidance was particularly important in the first couple of weeks, while I was getting used to the software stack used inside the firm.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy usually. Every sprint, I was assigned a good amount of work, which was enough to keep me occupied. During the last 2 weeks, the amount of work I had to do decreased considerably, mainly because of me having to prepare my final presentation on the internship.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was responsible for my sprint tasks. Good quality solutions were expected of me, and my code was subject to code reviews by my team.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • To a great extent. My technical skills have greatly improved over the summer internship, as I gained deeper knowledge of Java programming, as well as learned a lot about Git, Gradle, Spring framework, etc.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Friendly, overall positive

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Quite well organised. My workstation had been set up before I came there, and my place in the team had already been decided. We were also asked to provide feedback periodically by the HR staff. We also had a number of presentations from Morgan Stanley staff and associates. This was a good opportunity to learn more about the firm's culture and some of its side projects. As part of the internship, there was also the 'Zero to hero' challenge, where teams of interns had to compete for raising funds for The Prince's Trust. While it was certainly enjoyable to some extent, my humble opinion is that it served more as a distraction than anything else. What little time we had with the firm (10 weeks) would have been better spent by working inside the firm, gaining knowledge and being of help for our teams. It also doesn't really fit the 'giving back' mentality, since it's not the firm that's giving back, it's the contributors making donations to us interns.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • First week consisted of 2 training sessions, one in finance and the other in technology, with the aim of giving us an introduction to what we would likely encounter during our internship.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    National Travel

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Got another internship next summer; considering applying for a graduate scheme afterwards

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes there was. We were invited to various social events at the beginning and the end of the internship,

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I did not live in the area. As for socialising, the prices were a bit on the high side in Canary Wharf, but not too high.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Quite enjoyable - there are a few lovely bars in Canary Wharf, which I visited on a few occasions.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Well... there was the Zero to Hero challenge, good socialising opportunities. Oh, and also a volunteering day where I joined my team in helping clean up green spaces in Shadwell, which was very enjoyable, and quite challenging physically.

    5/5
