The Role
- Role Description
I mainly deal with managing relationships within the industry, for example resellers and affiliates and all other online marketing. However due to the small size and fast-growing nature of the business I have a chance to be involved in everything, from site design to recruitment.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
Fantastic group of people. Great informal atmosphere. Lots of chance to tailor your job to what you feel passionate about.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Everyone here is friendly and always ready to help, no matter whether the issue is large or small, personal or professional. They will all go out of their way to help you.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
A very high level of support, both in and out of work. Because of the small nature of the company you have direct access to the directors. However you are expected to pull your weight and work things out for yourself, as with any job.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Due to the small size and fast growing nature of the company there is a never ending list of urgent things to do. You have to learn to be organised and to prioritise pretty fast. You also have to be prepared to work extra sometimes and chip in with others duties when the workload gets too huge.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I am fully in charge of my areas and am expected to make decisions without consulting others where possible. I dealt with confidential information, company credit cards, financial documents and giving away free products.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I have not yet finished this placement but I already have a much better understanding of IT and marketing, which I could not learn from a text book. I have also developed personally and now understand what is required from a professional.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
With no uniform, no chain of command and being a general bunch of highly enthusiastic non-conformists everyone's got a great sense of humour and loves to have a laugh. We believe in working hard, but enjoying it.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
They were not aware of my placement needs (such as I was going to have to write a dissertation) when i started, however this may have been the fault of my placements office rather than them. When they did find out they helped me greatly.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
I could not have a lot of traditional 'formal' training as most of the time we were all trying things for the first time which none of us had particular experience in. However if I was ever unsure of anything the directors, or anyone else in the know, were happy to take time out to explain it.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- Working from home
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
They normally retain their students part-time after their placement year, and have also mentioned potentially having a graduate job.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
We got on well during work hours, but there wasn't many of us and we all lived quite far away, so we tended not to socialise much out of work.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
I commuted from my home town in Brighton. This was very expensive and tiring but work were happy to help and went out of their way to help make the journey easier.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
I commuted.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Due to the small nature of the company we don't hold many 'events'. However there were quite a few occasions to socialise.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
This company is extremely flexible and you are treated equally to everyone else and with respect. There is no real 'hierarchy' and everyone has responsibilities and is treated like an adult. It's an absolutely fantastic place to work!
