    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Responsibility was given straight away and it was very clear that hard work was rewarded with more opportunities to make the most out of your year. I worked in Marketing and Operations which has an incredible set of people who made very useful mentors throughout my year. I also had the chance to work with the agencies Microsoft work with to create their campaigns and this allowed me to real explore my creative thinking side.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone treats you like a key member of your team and when you want to add more value and create impact are willing to listen and consider. Although some people in the same office were in very high positions in Microsoft UK, everyone was very humble in their approach to what they do and how to learn from one another. The office has a very community feel about it and the people I were very social which added to the morale and energy!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had weekly meetings with my manager and monthly meetings with my mentor. The staffing team are very good at ensuring every intern has the support and guidance needed during their year to make consistent improvements from Q1 to Q4.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • No two weeks were the same and I was always busy due to taking on projects when I knew my day to day would be quieter than normal. Regardless of your role, there are so many projects you can get involved with that your day to day should never be boring and if you feel like you're not fulfilling your full potential this is something that you're encouraged to speak about in your 1:1's.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • My team did a lot of experiential events. From the first event, I was in charge of logistics, devices, content and liaising with sponsors/partners. I was fortunate enough to execute events in various places in the UK, Norway and France. Day to day, I lead on social media for one of our Microsoft sub brands and acted as the voice to consumers and the voice internally in terms of raising awareness around our campaigns. There's so much to list! However, the more hard working and consistent you are - the more responsibility is given.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Immensely, coming back to University to complete final year has been such a huge shock in terms of how I approach the week. Time management is always a huge improvement from working in the real world as there is wider impact on meeting deadlines and always being prepared for meetings etc. My confidence and networking are two skills that stood out for me, you meet so many people and once you realise that employees don't perceive you as an intern but a regular employee you begin to act like one - you forget you still have a year left to do sometimes!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very sociable! Around Christmas it was great fun in terms of office decoration competitions and during milestones in the companies history, you could really feel the enthusiasm within the office. In addition, when it's been a busy period, people were go for a drink after work - if they have time.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Highly organised, well structured and easy to understand how the placements would impact us and how we could gain the most from it - in addition their reflective practices helped with me in terms of my university assignment as they have a huge focus on personal development.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invests heavily in T&D. We were allowed to take Microsoft Office exams for free, there were days dedicated strictly to team building a reflecting on our progress as interns. We had a personal development programme which was completed throughout the year and submitted at the end.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Incredible, I had a better (and more mature) social lift during my Internship then I did at University.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cost of living was manageable, it's all about finding the right balance of places to go without spending too much.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I lived in London and worked in Victoria - incredible!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We have 101 Project team which are completely ran by interns - I led the London 'Get On' Events team and we had a lot of fun inspiring NEETS to consider a career in tech and presenting on employability skills. It was incredible rewarding to work autonomously and be given such responsibility. Quite a few of the interns went Skiing in Austria too!
