  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?

    • Thoroughly enjoyed the internship and felt like this was a fantastic introduction to the trading floor.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?

    • On each desk you are assigned a manager that initially explains what kind of work you will be doing and what is expected of you during the rotation. They help you set three business and three personal goals that guide you through the internship and help measure your achievements. Additionally, each intern is assigned a buddy that is a current first year analyst - they can answer the questions you could not ask your managers.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?

    • There is only so much you can do in a Markets role as an intern (given the need to be FCA regulated) and much of the internship is about being proactive looking for things to do. For me the day was normally split between shadowing people on my desk and doing actual work that included quick research to longer term projects. Additionally, all interns had to present a weekly stock pitch and partake in trading games which also took up time during the day.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?

    • Again a limited responsibility for interns given the need to be regulated. However, I did complete a project that was important to the desk itself as well as have some research based work sent to clients.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?

    • The trading floor is a loud work environment and at times when things get busy the work can be very pressurised (as an intern it is important to understand when are the best times to approach your team). This atmosphere really suited me and if you approach the internship in the correct way, I think it is nearly impossible to get bored on the trading floor!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?

    • Very well set up to let interns have a broad experience of the bank - one week of training in financial markets followed by two desk rotations which you state preferences for. The first week is fairly relaxed and is a great way to get to know the other interns, though the hard work starts from the second you begin the desk rotations.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

    • The internship is essentially a 10 week interview for a full time position so all interns are considered for future employment. The process is decided by reviews from your two desk rotations and a presentation to the graduate recruitment committee. I was offered a full time role and am very much looking forward to starting in 2015.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

    • We had a number of intern events organised throughout the internship from drinks receptions to a speaker series and a final summer party, so there was plenty of opportunity to get to know fellow interns from across the bank as well as network with employees.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

    • Living in London is expensive especially in terms of accommodation - I rented a flat with two other interns in London Bridge. And the cost of socialising was dependent on where you went out, though around the office in Canary Wharf tended to be on the expensive side.

    • More of a 'drinks after work' scene in Canary Wharf rather than actually going out.
