The Role
- Role Description
- Events – organising events for media including a multiplayer event for one of our games and a movie screening. I also attended The Gadget Show Live to demo games to consumers so as to create buzz for the titles.
- Community Media – building and maintaining relationships with community gaming sites and bloggers. This involved keeping them updated on all titles, providing assets and arranging special events.
- Liaising with the PR agency on all mainstream media activities
- Assisting the marketing team with implementing with implementing the marketing plan (including media campaign) for all titles
- Working with the sales team on retail marketing initiatives including a Toy Story 3 FSDU which was put into over 570 stores.
- General Admin duties- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I had an amazing year. I was given as many opportunities as possible to develop my skill set and was provided with a huge amount of responsibility. I worked in a very streamlined department so I always felt I was a valued and integral part of the team.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
I got on with my colleagues extremely well and they made me feel like a permanent employee rather than a placement student. I will keep in touch with many of them.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I had a scheduled 1:1 with each of my line managers every week. It was made clear that I could talk to either of them at any time about any issues I may have. Their line manager also told me I could talk to her at any time if I felt I couldn't speak to my line managers. I was given guidance on all projects and encouraged to ask questions.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Extremely busy but it wasn't too much to manage. It made the days go quick and ensured I was never busy and always interested.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I can't have imagined they would allow me so much responsibility, especially working for a global corporation.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I learned so much from the company and people I worked with. This will help create a new perspective when completing my degree work. I believe this placement has set me up with the skills I need to get a good job at the end of the course.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Fun! It was a quiet atmosphere as people were very busy and so were getting on with their tasks. But everyone was up for a laugh and there was much joking around. Working for Disney automatically made the atmosphere upbeat and lively.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Well organised processes in place to deal with the internship.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
I had objectives to meet and which were reviews every month. They also encouraged me to visit our agency's to get an idea of what they did.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Company Parties/Events
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
They don't offer a graduate scheme so it is a case of staying in touch with people and seeing if there are any jobs close to graduation.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Very good!!
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Drinks and food weren't too expensive as it wasn't central London. However the rent I paid was quite pricey.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Not amazing but we made it fun!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
The community affairs department organised volunteering days. As a team we did this twice during my time there. I was also part of a Disney netball league.

Placement Year Questions & Answers
-
How did you manage to get a placement with Disney and what was the application process like?
Thanks!Question asked by a RateMyPlacement user on 21st October 2010
-
The job was advertised through my university placement office. They sent through the info on the job to all students and I applied. I sent through my CV and a covering letter which included answers to some questions they had set. I then had a telephone interview with someone from the recruitment department. After this had a face to face interview with two people from the department I ended up working in. My situation was slightly different to normal though as this was a last minute job which came up and they recruited me and I started the job in a space of two weeks. Normally you would fill in an application form and send your CV. If chosen for interview then you would come in for the entire day and have several interviews and take part in a group exercise and a presentation.

how long did they take to get back to you?
Question asked by a RateMyPlacement user on 26th February 2011
-
My situation was slightly different as I didn't start until very late. Between applying and hearing that I had got the job it was only about 3 weeks. Normally, they respond to applications about 2 or 3 months after the closing date.

What kind of questions were asked at interview?
Question asked by a RateMyPlacement user on 29th April 2012
-
A variety of questions really, a lot of which are fairly standard for interviews. These included, questions about my previous work experience, strengths and weaknesses, what I could bring to the job role, my interest in video games (this was the department the job was in), what kind of analytical skills I have, what I was hoping to get out of the placement etc.
