Job Title: Placement Intern
Overall Rated 8.4

The Role
- Role Description
The scheme helps students in understanding and experiencing the task of managing a department. For the internship I was placed onto a department and was to shadow and help the manager in running the department efficiently.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
Really enjoyed it! Worth every little bit of effort and strain. Brilliant placement!
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Really felt like I had been part of the team for years rather than weeks! Everyone was so helpful and genuine.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
Every week I was to attend a meeting with a supervisor to discuss my progress, development and feelings towards the placement.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Managing a department is tough and so I was always busy and there were always obstacles to overcome. I did enjoy finding solutions to these obstacles, though!
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Really impressed by the amount of responsibility confided in me. I was able to implement my own ideas and visions in order to make the department run smoothly and successfully.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Everyday I am using the skills that I gained from the placement. My time there was invaluable!
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The other staff were sociable and easy to talk to which helped the days pass quickly.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Flawless. I knew well-beforehand what I would be involved with on the placement and how I was expected to progress.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
I was encouraged to ask for training and the courses they provided were unparalleled.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Sports and Social Club
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Before my placement concluded, I was recommended to apply for the graduate scheme.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
I worked in close contact with a fellow placement intern who I got on like fire with.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
The North is much cheaper than the South and so I noticed that my money went much further than it usually does back home or at uni.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
It's a city centre so there is bedlam everywhere!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
None were mentioned during my time there.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Although possible, you needn't only apply for your local John Lewis store, you can undertake a placement in any store nationwide, so take a challenge and go for one in a place you've never travelled to before. I chose Newcastle and it was great living in a city so far from home yet so friendly and enthusiastic.
