    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I very much enjoyed my internship- Mercer offered a variety of projects for me to get on with throughout my time here, giving me lots of responsibility while also offering me a helping hand when needed.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was taken along to important meetings, and my views afterwards were valued. I felt like they were interested in my perspective.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was assigned a buddy before the internship began- he was extremely helpful throughout, always available to help and answer any questions. We had mid and final internship reviews to discuss progress and any problems I had. Additionally the wider team I worked in were always available to give advice and help.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was set a number of projects over the entire internship, offering a vareity of different challenges, it was down to me to get on with them and once I had completed them the team would give me further work. On top of my projects I had various requests from the team to run off charts, peer review work and write up notes. I would say I was busy enough to not be bored but not too busy I ever felt under a strain.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a free roam over the direction of my projects with a small amount of guidance as to the aim of the project. There was nothing overly important I had excessive responsibility for, I feel I had a decent amount of responsibility for an intern.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The internship was not particuarly related to my degree however the experience and skills I have gained at this internship will undoubtably give me a huge advantage when entering the investment industry in the future- the exposure to the research involve in assessing fund managers and the people I have been able to speak with has given me a great insight into the investment world.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was extremely relaxed- everyone seems to know everyone and is was the norm to go for drinks on a Friday. Mercer put on various socials throughout the year which help create a good team spirit. Their is the opportunity to play sport- Cricket and Football to help get to know the office too.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well run- the HR team gave us a few days training to make sure we fully understood Mercer, its role in the industry and where we fit in. The HR team had catch ups throughout the placement to catch up. And it was clear the team I worked in had thought about interesting projects to set me.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm spent the first 2 days of the internship giving us training on the programs used by Mercer, as well as developing excel skills. They also organised presentation training to help us with presenting infront of an audience. They also had training throughout the internship to introduce us to the other departments within Mercer so we got a rounded view of the entire company.
