The Role
- Role Description
My role was within the wholesale marketing department which focuses on promoting Fidelity investments to wealth managers, insurance companies, banks and retail advisers.
They gave me a wide variety of tasks to carry out during my internship. Some were routine business tasks such as updating fund materials available to clients and making sure that the websites were up to date.
In addition to these I was set a number of projects. One project involved me working with a sales associate to design a system so that customers could be segmented by different criteria (e.g. profitability, market share etc) so that their value could be measured. This was to allow them to target the most valuable clients. This project involved meeting a a lot of senior managers and I had a lot of personal responsibility for it.
I also worked on analysing the composition of a fund to see whether there was any way to prevent/slow down the rate of redemptions.
They gave me responsibility for organising the marketing stands for an investment forum. This involved working with a creative design agency to come up with designs and themes. Additionally I had to liaise with different teams internally to obtain a lot of the stands' content including planning the use of new technology such as company iPads for the event.
Finally I was made to build from scratch a director's presentation on emerging markets which was being given at a 2 hour masterclass for clients. I was given a general brief for the presentation and so had the freedom to choose the content and direction of the presentation using all the internal investment information at Fidelity. Afterwards I had to meet the director to explain/justify the content and direction of the presentation and tweak it to his taste.

Internship Questions & Answers
-
Hi Reviewer, hope your career journey is going well. It would be great to know what you are doing at the moment, am I correct in saying you have a degree in marketing (considering your placement role)?
My main question is what made you stand out from other applicants. Was it your experience, or your covering letter? Did you have contacts within the company?

Hi,
I don't have a degree in marketing. I have one in economics. My degree wasn't very important in aiding me get the internship. Although a degree in marketing would be useful!
When I applied for the scheme I wasn't sure which area I would be placed in. There were 3:
1. Sales and Marketing
2. Business operations
3. Investment operationsIt was only before the final interview and after the assessment centre that I was told which area I had been placed in.
They chose marketing for me because I had some marketing experience from working at my university RAG (charity arm) and from a summer job I had working for a broker.
The summer job, student RAG work and being part of the officer training corps meant that I had plenty of experiences and examples for the inevitable competency questions.
After the internship I decided that I wanted a different role so I am now a consultant at a Big 4 firm. Now I am on the other side the advice I would give is:
1. Do your research. There's lots available on Fidelity online. Also know a bit about future trends/threats/opportunities for the investment management industry.
2. Put some thought into how you would answer competency questions.
3. Dress smart, it leaves a good impression.
4. Smile and be enthusiastic. I have already seen a few examples, in my current job, of borderline candidates get offers because they were easy to talk to and eager. People prefer to work with friendly and keen colleagues and small things like that can make the difference when choosing between two good candidates.
5. Luck: is important. I've had interviews which have gone badly for uncontrollable reasons like the interviewer's personality clashes with yours etc.. Life's like that. But then luck works both ways so you will have good ones and bad ones. I lost track of how many rejections I got during my student years.
All this advice is quite generic but then again there is no special way to get an internship... Well unless you have contacts (which I never had and most of the people I've met didn't either)!
