The Role
- Role Description
This placement provided the opportunity to work as a project engineer on the 155mm Carrier shell project at BAE Systems Global Combat Systems Munitions. Unlike many indirect fire projects, the 155mm Carrier Shell project provided the opportunity to work on the design and development of a new munition product as its maturity progresses through the complete lifecycle from concept generation to in-service. The aim of the project is to develop a future carrier shell capability with the potential to accommodate a number of different payloads within a common shell body, providing flexibility and the potential to integrate with future technologies whilst investigating novel technologies and manufacturing techniques. Key responsibilities and tasks conducted during placement include:
- Design and development of testing methods, facilities and projectile features
- Conduction of testing and evaluation of system parameters and design trade-offs
- Understanding and cascading system requirements through sub-systems and components
- Contribution to project risk management, design review preparation and safety

Very good placement within small team with challenging objectives.

Small, tight team provided the oppurtunity to get heavily involved in the project and provide a greater contribution.

Approachable manager meant that guidance was always available when necessary

As the project has a key engineering milestone placed upon it, this meant that there was always enough work to do on the project.

Responsibility given for achieving all of own objectives and for contributing to the overall project

Time management, design and communictaion skills developed are all skills that I can easily transfer to my next placement/future roles.

During my 6 month placement, I have completed the three peaks for charity and been involved with squash and football activities outside of work
