    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Excellent practical work experience. main project was technical-based, had a lot of data-based smaller projects as well.

  • I felt well-valued by my line manager and department head.

  • Line manager had 2 meetings a month with me.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The first week was a bit slow as I had to get to speed with the department, from the second week through to the very end I had a constant stream of work, so I was very satisfied.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I had complete autonomy in my main project, with the opportunity to go off-site to any sites if it helped me in my project.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I have picked up at NG will certainly help me in applying for jobs in oil & gas.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very relaxed, conversations were commonly informal with a lot of banter, allowed to listen to music via earphones throughout the day. People always brought in cakes/snacks for the rest of their team.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My line manager had only been told that he would be having me in his department with 2/3 weeks notice. However, he managed to deal with that very well and consistently gave me work, although I think that coincidence has a lot to do with that.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company allowed me to go on numerous in-line inspections. They also allowed me to go to off-site maintenance visits, off-site installations, maintenance plants and company presentations on new technologies, all to further enhance my personal development.

  • I have an early assessment centre with them in a few days.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The local town, Leamington spa is a bit quiet during the summer so not great, but interns still met up on fridays for a drink.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Typical rent for 1 bed place is about 250-400pcm, depends what you really need in terms of location and quality of flat/room/house.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Leamington Spa is very quiet during the summer, so not too great.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Friday evening drinks, new net events i.e. a hog roast in July with olympic-themed sports day... was fun!
