The Role
- Role Description
For the first few months I was shadowing and learning from the store manager and then in the last months I took control of the store on occassions under assessment of the manager.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I like it alright but it were stressful and hard work. It has definelty opened my eyes to what my future holds when I become a manager of a business.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
The staff and manager were great with me and helped me in the first few weeks and then they were respectful and great to me when I was acting as manager and treat me well.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I was always in close contact with the manager as I was shadowing him so I was given loads of guidance by him and learnt loads from him.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
At the beginning I didn't really have that much to do but once I bedded in I was running the store so I were constantly busy making sure everyone was doing what they should be and we were hitting sales and customer service targets.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
A few times I was the acting manager of the store so I were given unlimited responsibility.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Huge help! I now have experieance of running a store and the responsibility and job apsects a manager has to do. I've sampled the working life so now I am prepared for when I do graduate and get my job.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The atmosphere in the store were great and I really enjoyed the authority I had.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Everything was organised moderatley but I sometimes felt that I had to do all the initial and pressing work instead of them being forward with me. I had to initiate it all.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
I got to go on a company course regarding store management which were a great help. They were great in terms of training.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- National Travel
- Financial Bonus
- Company Parties/Events
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
They never mentioned to me about a graudate scheme or job possibilities so I'm unsure.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
I were the only student there.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
My hometown--so socialising was cheap as chips as I lived with my mum.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Bury's fair good with a few bars but Manchester is a few miles away and an unbeatable night out!
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
The city is close so there's loads of activities and entertainment out there!
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
The investement in training was a huge benefit to me and living in the same town meant it were a rewarding experience without breaking my bank.
