    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • There was a great range of tasks that I was assigned to- no two days were the same and you never quite knew how your day would pan out! Despite arriving with very little skills and knowledge we were immediately given real projects to work on and it was great to see how rapidly we progressed in such a short period of time.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Deloitte treated us so well during the whole placement. There wasn't a single person who was unhelpful, rude or looked down on any of us. Everyone was so supportive and always willing to offer help and advice. We were treated to a few free meals and excursions during the placement too. Furthermore, Deloitte paid for all the interns across all the regions to stay in the Belfrey Hotel as part of our induction week which was also an amazing experience.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was supported very well by the teams that I worked in. However, the more questions you are willing to ask, the more you will gain out of their support and guidance. They are more than willing to offer support and guidance but to a certain extent it is down to your own initiative to seek advice when needed. They aren't mind readers!

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The days varied, sometimes I was intensely busy - particularly as my week in tax involved a period when many associates were on holiday! However, it was nice to know that they trusted me to engage in their workload, some of which had very short deadlines. Other days I was only fairly busy - but there are always things to be doing if you find yourself in this situation - you just have to ask around for more work! You will never find yourself bored or with nothing to do.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a fair bit of responsibility during my placement. The majority of the time, the most responsibility lies within the managers/assistant managers who oversee your work. However, I was assigned to certain tasks where my work was going to be the final input before it reaches the partners which was quite scary!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have learnt a wide range of skills that will not only help me academically but also socially. at our induction we undertook a day of team building skills which was a great way to get to know my fellow peers who I had not met before! It has given me a lot of confidence within the work place and taught me what really goes on in the real world. Furthermore, before I applied to Deloitte I had never experienced an interviewing process or an assessment day which are key business areas that will help me in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I took part in the professional services rotation scheme and so worked in 2 departments at Deloitte. Both of which were vibrant and full of energy. Everyone was so kind and friendly and really supportive of one another. It was a great atmosphere to work in.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Overall, my placement was very well organised. We were given constant updates via e-mail before we started and also had the opportunity to join a facebook group where we got to meet and chat to fellow peers before we started. This was great for asking each other questions that we probably didn't want to ask the head of HR at Deloitte - such as what we were going to wear! We were each assigned a buddy in both our rotations and so in the unlikely event that we weren't sure what was going on - our buddy always helped up with those questions!

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm invested a huge amount into us. We undertook an induction training week at the Belfrey Hotel where we were given extensive training on team Building Skills, general presentation skills, interviewing techniques and report writing. They are vital for any workplace and a lot of time, money and effort had been incorporated into this!

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am currently about to have my partner interview and have my fingers crossed. It would be a fantastic place to work and I really hope I work for them in the future.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Brilliant social scheme. We all got on so well and went out3/4 times a week and always met up for lunch too. Deloitte paid for us to go bowling, we have a few free meals out together and every first friday of the month there are free drinks for the whole office. They treat their staff very well which in turn makes us willing to work hard!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I commuted from Derby to Birmingham every day which was quite expensive and time consuming - but costs of flats were very high and hard to get for just 6 weeks. So I think I made the right decision. Most clubs you have to pay around £6 to enter which I wasn't quite used to! But for saying Birmingham is the second capital city I thought on the whole it was OK price wise.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The clubs were so much bigger and better than where I live! And that made it worth the entry fee. They also stay open later than my home town - around 4am.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was opportunities to join many sporting teams - some of my friends joined the hockey and cricket clubs. unfortunately for me, I play netball and tennis and the teams had already been selected and the season was about to finish. there will definitely be more opportunity if I was able to join on a full time basis.
