Job Title: Summer Pacement
Overall Rated 6.3
★★★★★★☆☆☆☆
The Role
- Role Description
Planning maintenance for a spring 2010 oil refinery shutdown.
Roles:
Working in Excel & SAP.
Corresponding with other contractors and the Client.- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
Good second year placement working in a small team. Downside being lack of any other young people there!
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Given real roles and responsibilities vital to the project (in its early stages).
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
Very good guidance given 1-to-1 by the planning engineer for several days at the beginning of placement
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Most of the time a very good balance, however, as these jobs are, was often left waiting on information from the client, thus idling.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Plenty, sometimes perhaps too much for a placement student, very good.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
Genuinely good learning experience, more from a life-skills perspective than technical. Any work experience is great experience so long as your not just a teaboy, which i certainly wasn't.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Several other contractors also planning for same shutdown on same floor, good environment.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Well, but not greatly.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Little, though they may argue little was required.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
Good. Well paid, though perhaps not that riveting
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
No other placement students were there!
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Just no. Milford Haven is the antonym of party. BUT VERY CHEAP!
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
A few sleepy pubs, but not much.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Limited, though the area was beautiful for walking, cycling etc.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Overall a good placement though marred by location in deepest darkest west wales.
