Job Title: HR Summer Intern
Overall Rated 7.2

The Role
- Role Description
• Created and developed the content for external internet pages
• Lead the implementation of the Employee Referral Scheme within the technology division
• Delivered presentations to Senior Executives
• Analysed, compared and presented findings from management information
• Scrutinised the recruitment process within the Technology division and executed radical changes- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
Was a good and enjoyable placement but I would have enjoyed more variety in the programme structure
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
My team embraced me as a regular employee and made sure that I had the relevant support when needed and helped me understand how to work with Senior Executives
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
Managers were involved for the most part - due to the nature of their work, I was often left to my own devices and had to use my own initiative to find work to do
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
Quite often I would have to find my own work to do by speaking to people outside of my own team as work was often unique for each member of my team and not easy to pass onto someone else
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
A lot of the time, I was left to develop my own ideas and engage with relevant external stakeholders to ensure that work was done on time, on budget and up to a standard fit for Barclays
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
The skills I developed were more additions to my current skill set but the experience of working in a corporate environment was invaluable and made me realise a lot about where I'd want my career to go.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Good environment but due to high work loads for members of my team, it was difficult to have fun offive banter.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Overall, was organised very well and was set in clearly defined strucure but the work set for me within my own team wasn't organised with great thought.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
Ensured that I had clear objectives and development points for my time here, and I knew what I was working towards
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
After the internship, there is a final assessment centre for all interns - regardless of performance in the 8 weeks - the programmes are designed to have graduates on the executive committee within 10 years
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
As a group of interns, we took it amongst ourselves to socialise and met up every week - this was particularly good for the interns that were new to London and didn't have anyone else to hang out with - this was all encouraged and supported by the graduate team
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Travel within London is not cheap and Canary Wharf is not a place to be going out if you're on a student budget!
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Was ok, not a great deal of activity for students to engage with
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Often invited to events
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
Definately a worthwhile experience - you're often given the opportunity to work in situations and with people that it would normally take years to achieve otherwise.
