The Role
- Role Description
design 3D and 2D CAD parts of an aircraft
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
the job was very hot and cold. one day you will have loads to do and plenty of support. other days you are left twiddling your thumbs because no one is available to help you or work has dried up
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
i got a contract extension and a pay rise. they are now keeping me on part time
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
higher management i hardly ever spoke to, however department management and my team where always there for help
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
either very busy or bored depending on if we where waiting on other departments or had deadlines.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
i was given the opportunity to design small parts on my own or worked as a valued assistant to bigger more important jobs
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
ive spent the past 14 months using CAD every day, with the support of people who have used it everyday for 15 years. its practice that you can never receive at uni
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
everyone was friendly and polite
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
there was no training or scheme for me. i was given some manuals and left to train myself for 2 months until one day i was put into a team and worked as a standard member of staff
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
early on, none, later on after they saw my potential they put me on 2 training courses. but working alongside others they answered more questions than you can learn on a course/ degree
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
the majority of staff turn contractors after 5 years, this gives no job security.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
weekly football games, occasional team nights out and other team building sporting exercises
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
i lived with my parents and worked 10 miles from home so it was standard expenses for me
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
10 mins away from manc city centre
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
at least 2 football games a week, many guys played golf to tag along to
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
work 4.5 days a week, you can take as much unpaid time off as you want (obviously dont go over board or they will kick you out)
