Job Title: Actuarial Intern

The Role
- Role Description
I had two main projects to work on, both confidential, therefore details can not be specific. Nevertheless, it was all extremely interesting and I was able to mix with a range of different departments in order to gain information. Overall I have found it a valuable learning experience.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I really enjoyed the placement everybody was extremely welcoming and helpful from day 1. Nevertheless, some of the tasks that I had to complete were slightly mundane, but that is to be expected with any internship.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
During the first few weeks I did not really feel like i belonged in the team as they were so busy I felt slightly helpless. However, as the weeks have progressed my team have done a great job of making me feel like a valuable member and they have supported me in any difficulties or problems I may have with my projects.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
The management within my team was really good, I was made to feel that nothing was too much trouble and they were willing to take 30 minutes to go over concepts that I struggled with rather than just leaving me to my own devises.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
This varied from day to day, some days I could be extremely busy others I could be waiting for other teams to get back to me. It tended to get businer towards the end of my placement.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I believe I was given quite alot of responsibility, one of my projects was my own and this meant that I had sole responsibility of obtaining data and organising meetings. I really enjoyed that I was given this responsibility, however, support was always available should I require it.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
It has broadened my business knowledge and I have been able to relate things I have learnt already in uni to real life work which can sometimes be hard to do with the course that I am in. It was very useful and I believe anybody seriously considering a career as an actuary should try to gain an internship.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
It was always a great atmosphere to work in. Not sure you could say the fun never stopped mind, after all it is an office work has to be done.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
Like with most things improvements could be made, but on the whole it was extremely well organised.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
It feels like they have invested a lot of time and expense into my internship, I went to many talks in order to aid in my development and training and it was all very useful.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Sports and Social Club
- Company Parties/Events
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- Above 25 days holiday
- Healthcare/Dental
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
I would love to be offered a full time job.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
There was a large group of interns and we all got on really well and had a great time in work and out of work together.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Average - depends where you go and where you live etc.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
Pretty good - just need to know where to go.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
There were an aweful lot of sports clubs and other groups that I could join.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
I throughly enjoyed it - it was a really good experience and the company and people are great.
