The Role
- Role Description
Reviewing documents, drafting e-mails, letters of advice and deeds, summarising government and industry reports, liaising with clients, taking minutes.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I very much enjoyed the work placement generally. It combined a good quality of work with a good social side.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
I interacted with many of colleagues at varying levels of seniority, and I felt that they valued and appreciated the work I did.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
All members of my department were on hand to guide or advise where necessary.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
I was kept busy with many projects, with a good mix of short pieces of work and projects taking several days to complete. However I never felt under pressure to take on more work than I could cope with.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was given a great deal of responsibility. I'm not sure how much of this was due to the fact that many of the trainees in my department were on holiday, but I did feel that I was trusted to tackle some complex work and produce work of a high standard
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I am very grateful for the invaluable insight I gained into the law firm. I was given exactly the sort of work that I would be expected to do as a trainee solicitor. I'm sure that it will prove very useful in any future job applications.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Atmosphere was good, with no great divide between partners, trainees and secretaries
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
While ths scheme was generally well-organised, the project that we were asked to complete took up a great deal of time and left little time for anything that wasn't work or sleep in the second week
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
The company invested a great deal of time, effort and money in us as vacation scheme students. My supervisor in particular gave up a great deal of her time to explain alien topics of law to me
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Sports and Social Club
- Company Parties/Events
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
3 weeks with the firm has only confirmed the fact that I would love to work for them.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
The social scene was good but aside from the social events that the firm had arranged, it was difficult to socialsie to a great extent as we were so busy with our projects.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Cost was very high, but this was not unexpected in Central London
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
The nightlife was good, lots of local bars and pubs
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
There were opportunities to become involved with sports teams and pro-bono work.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
I would rate this placement very highly. It is enjoyable, but also more demanding than many comparable City law firm placements. Be prepared to work hard, but also take advantage of the social opportunities presented to you - it's a great chance to get to know people from all areas of the firm.
