Job Title: Vacation Schene Student (solicitor)

Overall Rated 6.0

★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

The Role

Role Description

Supporting trainees, associates and partners in the Intellectual Property department of the law firm. The work has mostly been varied - research tasks, drafting letters, compiling bundles etc.

There has also been a project throughout the scheme - a Dragon's Den style group concept and presentation, followed by an individual written element.

1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

The quality of work was mixed - I think it depends largely upon the department in which you sit. The social side was excellent.

2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Rated 6/10

Again, fairly mixed.

3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

HR provided a very good support base - within the department, the support was less structured.

4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 4/10

At times it was quite difficult to ask for work given that everyone was fairly busy - then at times, there was loads to do!

5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 4/10

Nearly all of the work was just support work - but I suppose this is the nature of a vacation scheme.

6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

Learnt a great deal about the realities of commercial law, and the lifestyle attached to it. The intellectual property work was interesting and will help me in my further studies on the Legal Practice Course.

The Organisation

7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 4/10

Inevitably work is the most important aspect - but still, most staff are fairly good humoured.

8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

Very well - good events and training set up. The only criticism was possibly that there was too much to do!

9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Rated 6/10

the computer training wasn't particulalrly useful, but the networking event was beneficial.

10. What were the perks on your work placement?
★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 4/10

  • Subsidised Canteen
  • Company Parties/Events
11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Rated 7/10

Once on the vacation scheme, its roughly 1 in 2.

Other Information

12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
★★★★★★★★★

Rated 9/10

Everyone was very like-minded - also, given that we all worked pretty hard, everyone provided support for each other.

13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 3/10

Expensive for a student, but normal London prices

14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Rated 6/10

Immediate area pretty poor, but very close to Covent Garden etc.

15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Rated 5/10

A couple of sporting events, but not hugely encouraged.

In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?

Always worth doing any law placement, however much you enjoy them - it's always insightful, and very good social / professional practice.
