    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the programme. I had the opportunity to meet a lot of senior business representatives as recommended by manager. I was able to complete tasks that the business actually needed to be done and used. It was a real insight as I was exposed to a wide variety of roles available at Nomura. We were given the chance to network with employees at the bank and complete case studies which prepared us for the 10 week internship and grad scheme interviewing processed. I would love to be back at Nomura!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • From the first meeting, HR are very welcoming and help you settle into the bank quickly. We're then assigned a manager, mentor and a buddy, all readily available to help answer any queries. On the last day of my placement, my team took me out for lunch which was really nice as it was a chance to get to know everyone a bit more and say our farewells. I honestly feel like everyone there has a genuine interest in meeting new people especially young talent who will be the future of the bank.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • My manager was constantly checking in during tasks he set me whether I was okay and need any help. It was too much but the right amount of guidance I needed for the two weeks I was there. My mentor and buddy were also great and really helpful telling me their own experiences of when they started working for Nomura. HR are also really helpful and supportive with CV and cover letter help where they provided an actual workshop of tips to stand out

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • A senior manager I met and had a really long chat with gave me some really helpful advice in excelling at university and in the world of work. I will definitely keep everything he shared with me for life! The soft skills that you learn and practice during the insight program are also really helpful, we had an emotional intelligence workshop which highlights the importance of actually being able to interact and work with different people.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The insight was really well structured giving us a good balance of workshops and working at the desk. It was quite busy in the first week but the second week we were able to really focus on our tasks and meet people within the bank.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The atmosphere was amazing. Before starting the program I thought it would be really strict and people wouldn't be interested in talking to you but it is not like that at all! It was all fun and games, but my team were great all really cool people that you could have a nice tea/coffee break with.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were given a lot of workshops! Any more we would have hardly been at our desks. I think this was really helpful though as this gave us the skills that we need to get back into the industry, not just Nomura specifically. We were also given access to online training to learn more about the finanicial markets and pretty much anything else we wanted to learn related to the bank/sector.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I got to see what it is like and the work and the effort that they expect from you. I personally was not able to work on a project that my team was doing simply because there was not enough time, but I was able to see what tasks they have to complete throughout the year.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • During my interview, my interviewer told me about the culture telling me that everyone is really friendly and that Nomura has a really flat structure. But you won't really believe until you see it, and what she said runs really true throughout the bank. Everyone is keen to tell you what they do and are friendly too.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Extremely! What I initially thought I wanted to do was swayed so many times in so many different way. But I think this just shows how interesting and versatile the bank is, filled with friendly people. I definitely know that I would like to go back to Nomura, and definitely work in a bank.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • Nomura pay very well for your time and take care of most travel and accommodation expenses

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Prior to the internship we had a cocktail event for the class of 2014 where we had the chance to meet people joining the spring insight, summer placement, grad schemes and business representatives. This was a great opportunity to meet people that you most likely would never have crossed paths with. In addition, on the first day we had a networking lunch with business representatives and then networking drinks with the students on the spring program. And throughout the whole program my manager was really supportive of me going to meet people from all over the bank and his managers.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • On the last day which was the Thursday before the Easter bank holiday weekend pretty much everyone from the bank went to a bar just round the corner which was a great way to let your hair down and meet a lot of different people

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • There are quite a few things that you can get involved in, but most of these activities are organised within the teams themselves. For example, my team were going to play Soft ball in Hyde Park. There is Women in Nomura which is pretty much self explanatory.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • 100%! I wish I could go back to do it all over again. I've already told some of my friends to apply for the summer placement next year.
