The Role
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
My tasks varied so it was kept interesting also my role changed over the year so I got additional responsibilities and new work to do.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
Treated as a member of the team as oppose to an intern. The work that I did was used by different members of my team and other teams so my contributions felt valued.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
There was a lot of support available. Could have a one on one with my manager as often as I liked to raise issues, ask questions or just to be updated on what I will be working on. Manager was always there to help and always made time.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
It varied weekly and monthly. Usually I would be more busy at the start of every month due to the monthly reports that I was responsible for. Some days were more quiet than others, but there was still always work to do.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
Had quite a lot of responsibility. Regularly had important pieces of work to do, some of which was distributed to the whole of finance. Also, was given projects that required my sole input.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
The skills I learnt will definitely assist me with my final year and in my future career too. Some of the skills include: Teamwork, Communication, Technical and Analytical. Also was able to go on training courses which were essential to my development.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
Pleasant atmosphere. Relaxed within Pricing, always had a laugh and received support when it was needed.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
It was set up very well. We had good contact with the old interns to ask any questions we wanted. Also, we had monthly intern meetings to discuss anything that we wanted. It also gave us a chance to give our feedback on what we thought could be improved.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
The company invests in you in well. There are 3 core courses that you are enrolled for which are Presentation, Influencing and Facilitation. I found these to be very helpful. In addition, there are optional courses that you can choose which help to develop yourself and build upon your skills further.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Subsidised Canteen
- Subsidised/Company Gym
- Company Parties/Events
- Healthcare/Dental
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
GE is an organisation that I would strongly consider for future employment. They have a graduate program in Finance called the Financial Management Program (FMP) which has been recommended to me on several occassions.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
Yes we often met for lunch. Also, out of work we did quite a bit together, including Christmas dinner, bowling, house parties, etc.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
Cost of living and socialising was reasonable. Luckily I didn't have to pay rent!
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
There are a few pubs in and around Harrow. Also, in Watford there are quite a few pubs and clubs.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
GE have a Volunteering program where employees volunteer for activities such as painting a room in a school. There is also sports and regular socials for everyone to enjoy.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
I would definitely recommend a placement with GE Money Home Lending. As well being coached with your learning and development you gain great business-wide exposure. You get real responsibility but you also get support if and when it is needed. And another good thing is that it is a globally diversified company so there are opportunities in many different sectors all around the world.
