About You
I found the work really interesting and my mentor easy to get along with. The only downside was the long hours.
My mentor made me feel at ease straight away on the first day and my colleagues were lovely. They arranged events for all of the students on summer internships, like bowling nights and cricket matches. I really felt like part of the team.
My mentor was there to help me most of the time and I was also appointed a buddy. The buddy was a recent graduate and was very busy a lot of the time. If I asked for guidance I received it, but many were too busy to ask me if I needed any support.
I always knew that I would be interested in finance/accounting after university, and this experience with HMRC has made me consider working for them in the future.
The Company
Everyday I had a set out timetable, and I knew exactly what I was doing and who I was meeting.
Most people were up for a quick chat, and I had a lot in common with my mentor. Most of the team took the lunch break at the same time, which was great.
I wasn't really taught anything I didn't already know, but I learned a lot about behavioral insights which was quite interesting. There was no training course, etc.
I was really treated like a permanent part of the team, which meant that I was given proper tax cases to look at, and stayed part 6 which I would were it a full time job.
The culture seemed really friendly and energetic overall. We all went out for drinks on the last day and it was really great fun.
Everything Else
I was reimbursed travel expenses to and from work and whilst at work.
I didn't really take part in any important meetings, so it was difficult to meet people outside of my team.
I met other interns, which was great fun, especially as we were all doing completely different things and had completely different career goals. But, I barely met anyone of a really high grade or outside HMRC.
Employees do a lot of volunteering as team units, including fun runs, which sounded really great.
It was a great experience and I made some amazing friends!
