The Role
I have really enjoyed the placement so far!
90% of the people in the company are fantastic, and very accommodating towards the students. Very few unfortunately seem to forget you're a student and still learning, and can be harsh towards you.
Most of the supervisors were very happy to help with anything, however the placement supervisor was possibly the worst at support and guidance.
With any engineering job, there are ups and downs depending on projects, however I feel that my work rate reflected that of the company.
Within my first few weeks I was given a massive project to start and finish largely on my own with little help.
I want to be a design engineer and at RP I have been one! Hopefully following my degree I can do a similar job and just be paid more!
The Company
It very much depended on who was in there. With the bosses gone there was a real fun atmosphere, however with the bosses there, you could tell there was some underlying tension.
The issue of providing tasks for the students was very poorly managed.
The students were allowed time in every department, enabling us to better design our products, but also giving us a valuable insight into each manufacturing/assembly process.
As a job, I would return depending on the heads of the design department at the time. However if it was the same as it is now, I would decline.
The Culture
There were only two of us, and we formed quite a strong team, supporting each other through.
Reasonable, I managed to just about survive on the tiny pay packet.
Went to the pub with the work guys every now and then, but other than that not much.
The opportunities are there. For example I did some voluntary work at another engineering establishment locally.
