    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was very interesting and gave me a great insight into the industry as well as teaching me a lot about power stations

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • There was positive feedback from all my colleagues and they really helped you when you were completing a task or wanting to find out more information.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was really good he supported me and tried to get me involved in many different aspects of what they were doing in his department.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Work could vary from very early starts when I had to travel to meetings in different cities, to sometimes waiting for someone to finish completing a piece of work so that i could look at it.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • It varied and since I was a first year intern the volume they could give me was limited but I did get more responsibilty nearer the end of my placement.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I now know far more regarding the industry and some of the topics that I learnt about while going around power stations I now use in University. It also gives you a great insight into what the Engineers do and the skills that you need to develop.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was a reasonably open and relaxed office, it was a confortable environment to work in.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I was the first placement student they had had in this department, even so my line manager always tried to arrange for me to be exposed to everything they were doing in order to keep it interesting.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Since I was there for a short period of time there was no official training however I do see the fact that I was taken to power stations around the country as a good learning experience. Further in making specifications I learnt a huge deal of what goes in to the business side of the energy industry.

  • National Travel

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • My line manager said that I could come back the following year to his department or he might try and organise a placement in another sector of the company if I wanted.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Since I was the only placement student there was really no socialising beyond the work place.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I rented out a room in someones house in Coventry it was at a very reasonable price and the company payed for my expenses.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Did not really try out the nightlife. Did not look or sound great from the word in the office

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes there were many opportunities especially those around raising money for charities. The three peaks challenge was organised which i took part in and was a great experience. I also got to meet people from other departments.
