    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Throughout my 14 month placement with McDonald's I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I was given real-working projects to work on, and liaised directly with a wide range of suppliers and other companies. Additionally, the chance of having my contract extended was a bonus.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From day one, I felt that I was immediately welcomed to the team. I had support throughout the year, and worked with the entire corporate estate - given that it was an IT Support role. My name was well known throughout the company, and felt that it did not take long to create strong working relationships and friends.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • At the beginning of placement I had a handover from the previous Industrial Placement Student, this was hugely beneficial as it started me off on the right foot for when I worked independently. Additionally, monthly meetings with my line manager were available if needed. Various training schemes are available too! Overall, the support at McDonald's was fantastic.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • For me personally, I like to be constantly busy and this was definitely the role for that. From day one I was immediately thrown into the deep end and started to fix any IT issues and look at project work. Gradually over time, the challenges would become more difficult. Project work also made my days much busier.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • There is a huge responsibility in the IT Customer Support role, especially when dealing with customer data. In terms of project work, the responsibilities for this was high as work had to meet strict deadlines whilst producing a high level piece of work.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt a great deal of both soft and personal skills. Prior to starting placement, I was a little more reserved and less confident at presenting meetings and liaising with staff. However now, I feel much more comfortable with that. Also, the training schemes which I attended will help a lot for my final year at University as these courses are relevant to my final year studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Work was always enjoyable and never dreaded the thought of going to work. Obviously, there are times where it is far too busy for fun, but overall it was great! Every quarter there are team building weekends, and regularly visit the local pub after work with colleagues!

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was well organised, particularly in the early stages where I had various meetings and training.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • McDonald's has some brilliant training and development schemes which are open to everyone. I attended four different IT related training schemes such as Project/Change Management, Business Writing Skills and the Microsoft Excel advanced training scheme.
