The Role
Very enjoyable due to range of work tasks, being in an area I am passionate about, travel around London and the UK. The only downside is being given admin type jobs alongside interesting projects.
The internship was voluntary and so I felt valued by colleagues, as they knew any work I was doing was for free and was at times easing their workloads.
I was given support and guidance when I needed it, from my team. There is a mentoring scheme that worked well for many interns, but my mentor hardly ever replied to emails and I spoke to her twice, for about 10 min each, over the 3 months at Macmillan.
Mostly very busy, but I like to be challenged and prefer that than not having much at all to do so it was a good level
A lot of responsibility with my own projects but specified tasks had to be checked over and edited by colleagues
Fantastic, tailored to what I want to achieve. I believe the experience of the internship helped me gain my PhD bursary.
The Company
Fun, but not to limit productivity. The open-plan office and being next to the meeting area meant that my work space could get fairly loud at times.
Fairly, wrap up day organised when a lot of interns have finished to go back to University, which is not ideal. However there is a member of staff that purely manages interns.
Lots of courses that you can do and can shadow/work in other departments to gain any relevant experience.
National Travel
I am doing a PhD for the next 3 years, but would always be open to come back. Many interns do get jobs within the charity.
The Culture
Sometimes meet other interns for lunch, there is a social team who organise events, one of which I attended was the sports day and was very fun.
London so expensive, but I lived in the outskirts which was cheaper, and Macmillan pay for travel to and from the office.
London, so great, although not sure about the area right next to the office. Also, much more expensive than I am used to.
Not something I did much of myself but I believe there are lots of different sports clubs. We also had a couple of intern socials and there are lots of Macmillan events to volunteer at.
