The Role
- Role Description
I have learnt how Pack Control works and experienced the potential benefits the system has to offer especially in Submarine constructions. Processes being streamlined and cutting down the amount of time wasted on various things always help in the construction of a submarine. A brief summary of what I had to do during my placement; Pack Control, 5S, 7 Wastes - T.I.M.W.O.O.D, Visual management, Andon, Standardised Work, A3 reporting, Kanban, Problem Solving, Lean Leadership, Kaizen, etc.
- 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
-
I did truly enjoyed my summer placement, it has been a learning curve for me and it also given me some ideas of what i would like to do for a career.
- 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
-
I got on well with the team, they have really helped me when I was struggling with some of the work but with their patience and guidance, I have improved in my work and it has also given me some confidence boost.
- 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
-
I asked for a transfer to different department as I felt it was not suitable and I was transferred to a different department effectively.
- 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
-
It varies on different days, but most of the time I had some work to do and plenty of meetings to attend.
- 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
-
I was given a job to train the apprentice about the company and why we do what we do and how it helps. It was a big responsibility and I felt good, knowing that my boss believed in me to be given this job.
- 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
-
I honestly have to say it has a big impact on me and how I do things. I have learned to set a target and aim to achieve the target, which helps with my course. I also do recycling now because as a graphic design student, I wasted a lot of paper and plastic so that was taken into account.
The Organisation
- 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
-
The team I was working for were great, we had a banter every now and then, which helps make the work more fun.
- 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
-
There was a slight communication break down over which department would suit me when I first started but that was sorted out quickly than I expected, but after that it was organised.
- 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
-
They have given me confidence in my ability to work and to communicate with other employees. They have encouraged me to do presentation, which I had lack of confidence to do but this area has improved slightly. I have better ideas of how business work and that is something that will be beneficial for me.
- 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
-
- Flexi Time
- Staff Sales/Staff Shop
- 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
-
It is appealing because they offered you an opportunity to study and work for them at the same time, they offered to pay for the course if you wanted to improve your skills and aims for promotions. They try to offer you the best of everything and also help you to reach your potential in certain areas.
Other Information
- 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
-
We have a meal/night out every once or twice a week to catch up and sometimes reflects on our experiences at work.
- 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
-
The cost to live here is reasonable and socialising were fine although the town itself could do with bit of renovation.
- 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
-
As I say previously, the town could do with renovation.
- 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
-
Plenty of activities, there's Lake District where you can go hiking, climbing, etc. Every weekend I go hiking or climbing so there's plenty of opportunity to do activities after work or weekend as we're on flexi-time, which helps.
- In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
-
I was concerned whether I would be cope to work for this company as it was very different from my degree course but with the team I was with, they have taught me so many things and it really has helped me in a long term. It is definitely worth the experience if you wanted to try/learn something different.
