The Role
I had an absoloutely fantastic year, gaining experience in a number of different areas while being in a fun and enthusiastic environment.
The entire department were like one big team, although my main role in corporate was small in comparison to the larger parts such as advertising and display, i really felt like the work i did was valued.
If i ever had any problems or queries with my work or responsibilities, both my line manager and the marketing director were always there to give me guidance and support. Despite this, I was always trusted to get the job done so did not feel like i was being constantly watched
I was given a lot of responsibility from the word go, which meant i was constantly busy. This was good for me though as it made the days go quicker although sometimes it got a bit stressful - especially in the lead up to Christmas (peak trading)
My role entailed a lot of responsibility from the word go which was challenging, but very rewarding. I got to manage and oversee a series of projects which felt great, and I felt like I was really doing work that was of importance - not just photocopying / making tea
It's helped considerably, I can already see the difference since i've been back for final year. I'm more motivated, have greatly improved my communication and analysis skills, and feel prepared for when i graduate and look to get my first proper role in a company
The Company
really fun, everyone always really motivated and enthusiastic
very well, i was exposed to a lot of experiences and responsibility, and most importantly met with my managers on a regular basis to discuss my progress
not much training was available at hmv, but i was always included in internal away days and attended our conferences to ensure i was aware of hmv and it's current position
hmv do not offer graduate schemes so there is not necessarily a job waiting for me when i graduate. However, i'd like to think that one day if there is a suitable role for me i could return to the department
The Culture
everyone was really sociable and often met up outside work for events such as gigs. I was the only student but there is a lot of young people in the office who i really got on with
Social scene was great as i was living and working in a really vibrant area in central london. Downside was the cost of living, as being that close into the city meant it was very expensive - buying lunch / drinks etc
I was smack bang in the middle of Soho which was a fantastic location
gig/concert tickets were always on offer, film premieres or even just people going for a drink on a friday night
